According to eyewitnesses, Qari Abdul Basit, the son of well known religious scholar Maulvi Abdul Samad, was on his way to the mosque from his residence when armed men on a motorbike opened fire, killing him instantly. The gunmen fled the scene.
He was shifted to Provincial Sandeman Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead upon arrival. A number of people reached the hospital for mourning.
After legal formalities, the body was handed over to an heir for burial.
Angry protestors burnt tyres on Kasi Road to protest the killing, blocking the road for most vehicular traffic. Most of the shops on Kasi Road and adjacent areas were closed due to the protest.
“It could be an incident of targeted killing and police are investigating,” a local police official said.
President of Jamiat-i-Ulema Islam Quetta Hafiz Hamdullah condemned the incident and said over 10 religious scholars belonging to the Sunni sect have been killed in the last few months in Quetta alone.
“It seems a powerful group is behind the targeted killings and incidents of kidnapping for ransom in Quetta which is why not a single culprit was brought to book,” he told The Express Tribune.
JUI-F leaders said religious scholars of Sunni and Shia sects were being killed following a conspiracy to spread religious differences in the province and that law enforcement agencies should unmask the killers otherwise the party would launch a protest campaign.

We don't want these religious scholars. This nation needs statesmen who will guide us to a correct path of development, peace, progress and brotherhood,
These scholars deserve this. Who poisoned the minds of common people? Who are systematically eliminating the minorities? What condemnation came from these so called scholars? I want answers.
had it been a ahmadi, It would have been HEADLINE all day on Express Tribune.
A cowardly act to say the least. The Quetta I remember doesn't exist anymore.
Patience is all I can request from all parties. R.I.P.
@Basit: Too bad the extremist killings aren't ever based in beneficial goals. It's about hating and killing because of bigotry.
Raymond Davis all over again only these two did not have a weapon to protect themselves.....
@Dr Khan: "Religious scholar killed in Quetta Imagine if it was an Ahmedi/Shiite scholar dead, headline would be somethjng like SHIA Scholar murdered by rival sect extremists. double standards"
OK Dr. Sahab, point taken. ET will have ample opportunities to remedy the situation in coming days, I have full faith in Mullah of every stripe!!
@Basit: yes we are all innocents.
Who would benefit most from fueling violence between sunnis and shias but an outside force?
Love for All Hatred for none is the only way forward for Pakistan
Yes shias are not the only victims here. Sunni scholars getting killed too ofcourse that wont make the news cos we are spose to be the villains. Btw iran has been known to be assassinating dissidents, and even suspected in the killing of the saudi diplomat in karachi and dhaka. I wont so much blame the shias of pakistan, but one cant rule out iranian hand in going after sunni scholars. They did that in the 90's and they are doing it now. Sad!
Religious scholar killed in Quetta
Imagine if it was an Ahmedi/Shiite scholar dead, headline would be somethjng like
SHIA Scholar murdered by rival sect extremists.
double standards
How many more Sunni scholars need to be murdered before the govt and media takes notice? Its general knowledge only murders of the minorities is given massive coverage but sunni killings are shoved under the rug. There needs to be a balanced and ethically boind reporting fair and just to eradicate any form of hatred or distrust from builiding.
@ Nadeem Khan ...all i can say is shame on you and shame on your thinking pattern..genocide..seriously..???? genocide is taking people off the buss any kill them based on their religion...genocide is killing 14 people in half an hour and repeating the same in few months.
May God brings peace to the family of the victim.
@nadeem khan: Genocide...sunni..lol
Khan sb you call this genocide, then what is your term for the shia killings?
JUI does not have a "scholar" in their ranks, and by scholar if you mean the morons who only know how to misinterpret religious text to create hatred then may be.
@Pakistan politics: Can prove of external involvement??
@Ch. Usman Ali:
Dialogue is not something that seems to be practiced in islam..... does not matter if it is PAK or Iraq or Afg..... the preffered means to settle this is by the sword or road side bomb.
Big joke of the day. Mullah is termed as a Religious scholar.
@nadeem khan Its not a genocide of Sunnis, though all killers should be punished. You want to find out how many shias have been killed. Then compare the numbers and the time line. You will know what genocide means. Besides, it would be more helpful to know which Sunni sect these scholors mostly belong. The ones that JUI and likes represent or be chums with usually, are a bunch of hooligans and terrorists, no true Sunni sect.
Who can kill Taliban Supporters n like minded??
What a pity ... Sunni and Shia "scholars" being killed !!! I think overall better for Pakistan that these scholars sort it out themselves ...
We must get rid of this sectarian violence to tackle with external involvement
"Angry protestors burnt tyres on Kasi Road to protest the killing, blocking the road for most vehicular traffic. Most of the shops on Kasi Road and adjacent areas were closed due to the protest."
And how does this helps?
You live by sword. you die by sword. Extremism is bad on any siide of thr track. Killing of the Kohistani passengers was just dispicable as this news. We should have dialogue with faithful from all sects to promote harmony and tolerance. Fire will always beget fire
This is indeed a serious matter and should be dealt with an iron hand. A news like this can start a sectarian war between sunni and shia and that will be devastating for Pakistan. A quick and strong action is necessary. The faderal government should provide all help to the provicial government to identify the criminals.
So the genocide of sunnis continues in pakistan, yet the tv channels and twitterati prsents a one sided picture only.
