ISLAMABAD: With the Chief Election Commissioner completing his stipulated term, Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry on Thursday was quick to nominate his temporary replacement.

Justice Shakirullah Jan has been nominated as acting Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), stated a press released issued here from the Supreme Court.

The nomination was under article 217 of the constitution. The current CEC Hamid Ali Mirza is due to retire on March 23.

The Chief Justice said that the nomination of acting CEC would be automatically removed after appointment of a new chief election commissioner.

“The oath of office will be administered to him by… Chief Justice of Pakistan on March 24,” the press release read.

Before Justice (retd) Hamid Ali Mirza hangs up his mantle as Election Commission head, he paid a farewell call on President Asif Ali Zardari at Aiwan-e-Sadr.

The President appreciated his meritorious services spanning over four decades in the dispensation of justice and lauded his valuable contributions on the road to making the electoral process transparent and credible. He noted the first ever five-year Strategic Plan of the Election Commission of Pakistan during his tenure as an important milestone in further strengthening the electoral process.

Good choice and appointment by CJP.

Justice (retd) Hamid Ali Mirza spoilt and tarnished his good career in eyes of people by some of his actions in last few months in office.

The PCO SC and its CJ should appoint the cabinet members and approve the new prime minister and president. He should also be responsible for his further extensions and appoint governors as well. In addition the CJ should make extensions mandatory for SC judges appointed by him and the generals and no extensions for members of congress.
