FAISALABAD:

The provincial cabinet will approve a proposal for setting up Lahore High Court benches in Faisalabad, Sargodha and Sahiwal in its next meeting, Law Minister Rana Sana Ullah Khan said on Thursday.

He was speaking with a delegation of Faisalabad Bar Association.

The law minister said the benches would start functioning once the Lahore High Court chief justice has endorsed the proposal referred to him by the cabinet through the Governor.

He said the government understood the concerns of lawyers’ community in the three cities, who had been demanding the establishment High Court benches for several years.

Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif had last week assured a group of lawyers in Sargodha that work on the matter would soon be initiated.

The lawyers had earlier forced an entry into the University of Sargodha and occupied a stage set up for a laptop distribution ceremony which was to be attended by the chief minister. The ceremony had started after lawyers cleared the area and left the university on Sharif’s assurance.
