Football: Richards apologises for ‘theft’ remarks

DOHA: Premier League chief Sir Dave Richards has apologised for his remarks after he launched a blistering attack on Fifa and Uefa, accusing them of ‘stealing’ football from the English. “England gave the world football,” Richards was quoted by the BBC. “We wrote the rules, designed the pitches and fifty years later Fifa and Uefa came along and stole it.” However, the comments were followed by an apology from the Premier League chief, which he said had intended to be ‘light-hearted’. Meanwhile, the Football Association (FA) distanced themselves from Richards’ remarks.”Richards is not representing the FA at this conference and his personal views are in no way shared or endorsed by the FA,” said a statement.”
