Domestic violence: Woman freed from husband’s prison after four days of ill-treatment

KHANEWAL: A woman was recovered from her home on Saturday night after four days of detention following a beating and torture by her husband.

Sukhan Mai, mother of four, was recovered by a court bailiff.

She was given first aid, and then sent to a Darul Amaan shelter home. the children accompanied her.

Police said Sukhan Mai, a resident of Lodhi Colony, had been tortured by her husband, Pervaiz, on suspicions of an illicit relationship. They said he had cut her hair.

They said her husband and an accomplice, Noor Ahmed, had been arrested for keeping Sukhan Mai in illegal confinement and forcibly removing her hair. Police said that a neighbour, who requested not to be identified, had informed the court about the detention. He had told the police that the neighbours had not seen Sukhan Mai for some days. He said that he had later found out that Pervez had locked her in a room, beat her and deprived her of food. He said some women in the neighbourhood had told him that even her children were not allowed to enter the room where she was being kept.

A bailiff and a police team raided Pervez’s house on Saturday following court order and found Sukhan Mai locked in a room. They said she appeared to be feeble.

She was taken to the court and also recorded her statement with the police telling them that her husband had wrongly accused her of loose morals and frequently beaten her up.

She said she did not want to go back to him as she feared for her life.
