PESHAWAR: Customs officials foiled a smuggling bid on Monday after they seized 112 kilogrammes of fine quality heroin from a vehicle on GT Road in the Pabbi area of Nowshera district.

Customs Collector Jahanzeb Mehmood told media persons that the department had received information of a vehicle carrying heroin from the Shakas area of Jamrud in Khyber Agency to other parts of the country. He added that four different teams had been constituted and deployed to different locations once the information had been received.

"The vehicle was identified and stopped. Heroin was recovered and the driver was also arrested," he said. "Some unidentified persons onboard another vehicle following the first one opened fire at the officials, which led to the driver escaping the scene."

Mehmood said the current seizure of heroin was the biggest since the last two decades, adding that an FIR had also been registered for further inquiry.
