‘More DNA samples required’

KARACHI: DNA samples of the trainee nurse allegedly raped at Jinnah hospital by the hospital’s medico-legal officer were declared insufficient to draw any conclusions.

The National Police Bureau’s DNA testing laboratory sent out its preliminary report, in which it has declared the evidence inconclusive. However, the report is not final. Further samples will be taken by the chemical examiner and sent to the bureau laboratory.

On July 13, JPMC medico-legal officer Abdul Jabbar Memon allegedly raped a nursing student in his apartment at the doctors’ mess. The nurse had jumped off the balcony of his apartment in an attempt to escape.

MLO Farida Mobin initially reported that there were signs that she had been raped. She sent DNA and cloth samples for chemical examination.

An inquiry committee formed by the health minister confirmed that the nurse had been raped. The committee ordered that DNA samples be taken from Memon.

Meanwhile, a court has issued a show-cause notice to the investigation officer in the case for failing to submit the challan against the MLO. Judicial Magistrate South Abdul Qadir demanded a reply by August 7. The IO had submitted an interim challan at the last hearing and the court had ordered him to submit the final challan by August 4. The case against MLO Dr Abdul Jabbar Memon was registered at the Saddar police station but the investigation was carried out by SI Aslam Jatt of Boat Basin police station.
