"Lt General Bikram Singh has been designated as the next chief of army staff in the rank of general, with effect from the afternoon of May 31, 2012,"
Singh currently heads the army's eastern command.
The 59 year old will be the first army chief, amongst recruits, who joined after the 1971 war with Pakistan. He will be the second Sikh to head the army after General JJ Singh.
Singh was commissioned into Sikh Light Infantry Regiment in 1972 after finishing his course at the National Defense Academy & Indian Military Academy.
Other short-listed candidates included Vice Chief of Army Lt Gen Shri Krishna Singh and Northern Army Commander Lt Gen KT Parnaik. Singh was chosen for being the senior most amongst them.
Singh’s appointment as army chief comes after a scrutinising vetting process in wake of allegations that he was involved in a fake shootout case in Indian Administered Kashmir and having an alleged Pakistani daughter-in-law.
The army chief designate was allegedly involved in a fake shootout in Indian Administered Kashmir in March 2001. The mother of an alleged militant, killed in a south Kashmir village, claimed that his son was a laborer and troops headed by Singh had killed him in a staged gun battle.
However, Kashmir Police had cleared him in the case, even though a petition was still pending in Jammu & Kashmir ‘s High Court.
Another allegation against Singh, reported by the Indian media, was that the Defence ministry had sought a detailed clearance from intelligence agencies on his eldest daughter-in-law who was alleged to be a Pakistani citizen, which had raised fears of "security risks and implications". However, agencies rubbished this and informed the ministry that Singh’s daughter-in-law was a US citizen, having an Afghan father and a Central Asian mother.
Earlier incumbent General VK Singh, who was engaged in a bitter legal battle over his date of birth, was issued a Retirement Warning Letter (RWL) by Military Secretary's branch early this week after months of row over his age which was finally settled in the Supreme Court last month.

@Nomi: You say "Your comment about your country having strict control over the army is not entirely true. Around the world, the army establishments’ have significant influence on the civil Government. Your army has resisted many humane moves in Indian Administered Kashmir by your civil Government. AFSPA ( Armed Forces Special Powers Act) is an example." Sir, Strict control does not mean gagging their right of opinion on pertinent military subjects. The army is trained with huge national expenditure and to get the opinion of experts is correct. And please know that Armed Forces Special Powers Act was framed by the civilians and passed in our Parliament and not made by army.Yes Indian generals do not fly all over the world of their own and control the foreign policy etc etc.
@lashari baloch: Idris Lateef was our Air Force Chief dude - proud Indian Muslim. And the current Air Force Chief is a Christian, ACM NAK Browne. I am not saying for a moment that minorities do not face discrimination in India - our Sachar Commission report clearly documents discrimination against Muslims, but the armed forces still remain a relatively ( only relatively) clean national institution.
When the whole of Pakistan was looking for Justice Bhagwandas during his acting tenure as CJP, guess what he was doing and where. He was in India looking for his inner peace which was missing in Pakistan. Nice, isnt it.
@Zeta: "Pakistan recently had a Hindu Chief Justice of Supreme court of Pakistan if that helps you. His name Rana Bhagwandas."
He was not the Chief Justice of PAkistan. He was the Acting Chief Justice for 3 months.
@SalSal: "Since when did Sikhs become minority in India? And by the way, when a Muslim becomes army chief then talk".
Sikhs are NOT a minority in India? What are you talking about? We have had a Sikh AND a Parsi and Christian army chief. We have also had a Muslim Air Chief Marshal who later went on to become Governor of Maharashtra - Admiral Latif. As for a Muslim becoming COAS in India - it may happen and it may not. Because in India religion is not a factor while making such decisions. By the way President of India is Commander in Chief of the India army and India has had 3 Muslim Presidents.
In any way, if members of 3 religious minorities have reached Chief of Army Staff position, it clearly proves that minorities are not discrimnated against. It is not necessary tat a Muslim get that position in order to substantiate this claim.
@Allah Ditta: So should India take advice from a failed nation
@PakistanZindaBaad: What is meant by "non practising muslim"? Either one believes in a particular faith or one doesn't. Just don't keep on coining the terms to suit your argument. Perhaps you meant "enlightened muslim"?
India was supposed to be a place where Minorities were not safe according to Pakistani founders. Today there is a possibility that both the PM and Army Chief, symbolically and otherwise very important positions, being occupied by minority community members.
@ zeeshan khan
we even had a Jewish Army chief. He defeted Pakistan in 1971.
@Pinky: Do Not to offend my Muslim brothers, if I state the fact that Government of all non Muslim country now a days will take additional steps to ensure that everything is A OK especially if Muslims are involved. We all see that on Airports of the world, in CIA and NYPD Practices etc. Considering past history of our two countries it is very obvious that eyebrows will be raised if wife of son of the Top Most Army Officer of India is Pakistani Muslim. As turned out she is of Afghan Origin US Citizen like millions of Indians and Pakistanis. Give Indian Government credit for not rejecting him for that reason without further investigation like lot of Indians might have wanted
To add in Rajeev Nidumolu's impressive list of Muslim Army Personnel I would like to mention Late Abdul Hammed. Company Quarter Master Havildar Abdul Hamid (July 1, 1933 – September 10, 1965) was a soldier in the 4th Battalion, The Grenadiers of the Indian Army, who died in the Khem Karan sector during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965, and was the posthumous recipient of the Republic of India's highest military decoration, the Param Vir Chakra.
@JSM: @Pinky: @Zeta: Rana Baghwandas NEVER WAS AND NEVER BECAME CHIEF JUSTICE of Pakistan. He held the post of ACTING CHIEF JUSTICE for a brief period from march 24, 2007 to July 20, 2007 to fill for Iftikar Chaudhry. strong text
@gp65: India has had Christian, Parsee and Sikh army chiefs. The Chief of the Air Staff has also included a Muslim. No other country has had such diversity.
@Babar: The Singh family name is one of the most common in India. It is used by several Hindu groups such as Rajputs, Thakurs, Jats, Ahirs, Jadavs, Yadavs, etc and also, of course, by Sikhs. In fact, the majority of Singhs are neither Sikhs nor Punjabi.
@Satish Chandra: Dear Sir I think you read too much of Pakistan media and that is why you have also started dreaming, sensing and unearthing conspiracy theories all around you. Please wake up Sir you are in India... I hope.
Zeta
For how many days was Mr Bhagwandas Chief Justice of Pakistan?
When will we see any Tony, Peter, John, Ram Das, Rahul Singh or any other member of a minority in this position???? No chance, so better keep quite but this is the beauty of democracy where one can say what he or she feels is right.
@Allah Ditta: and they will never be, unless they make efforts on their own. it is not pakistan where you are rewarded for the faith you profess but the kind of work you are doing
@Rajeev Nidumolu
Quite an impressive detail.I wonder how many Indians know about these illustrious Muslim officers in our army. I wish your post could have been published in evrey Pakistani newspaper (urdu in particula).
I am little amused that there is no comment on your post from the readers so far. May be they are awestruck.
@TrueMuslim: Improve you general knowledge. You have learnt only from madrassa where they teach everything according to their fancy. That is the main problem with your GK
@lashari baloch: Muslims in India are made commander-in-chief rather than chief commander. examples are Zakir Hussain and Abdul Kalam. These two were head of the India in your life time.
@SalSal: they are only 2% of the population of india,so to answer ur questions....SINCE ALWAYS...
@Pakistani First: Sure, Jinnah made a lot of promises but most of those promises have been broken by Jinnah's successors. Promises need to be kept if they recto have any value.
@Truemuslim
Genocide of Tamils in India? You must be smoking some grass! I am a Tamil Indian , I say there is no such things going on in my country. Tamils are prosecuted in Malaysia (muslim country) and in Sri Lanka (Sinhalese country) but now in India!
India is a secular country and will always be a secular country...we unite and bring different ppl together...we are the future..
@truemuslim, Yes being a tamil christian I can see genocide happening every day and muslims falling like flies before the indian army every day and by the way which fictional novel are you reading?
@Pakistani Observer: India claim it self as a secular nation ( and thats why its has to prove it self ) , and we Pakistanis are an Islamist nation, so we must prove our selves !
so there is no reasons and no ways for us to learn from them in the points U mentioned.
also I never seen any Practicing Muslim became president of India, they always make people who are secular & non practicing, and the Seat of president in a country like India mean nothing, bcs the chief executive there is the Prime minister , not the president, also Sikh consider them selves as a seperate nation, but Hindus of India consider the sikh as "Hindu" so thats why the Hindu indians made a sikh their army chief and their PM bcs they consider them "hindu " too.
and any way now the Indian president is a hindu woman, so now there is "no any muslim" president in India.
@Vishal
Your comment about your country having strict control over the army is not entirely true. Around the world, the army establishments' have significant influence on the civil Government. Your army has resisted many humane moves in Indian Administered Kashmir by your civil Government. AFSPA ( Armed Forces Special Powers Act) is an example.
So this narrative that indian army is completely under control is not true. In Pakistan, the army holds the seat of power, thanks to our politicians, who keenly support the Generals to share power and have no idea what the policies should be.
lastly, admit it honestly that indian army exercises its influences heavily whenever it can.
@SalSal: Indian has had a Christian army chief, it has had Muslim Air Force and Navy Chiefs, the present Indian Corps Commander in Kashmir is a Muslim.
@Babar: ” … Punjabis rule the Army, both sides of the border. :) … “ Yes, true perhaps, but one one side, they know their limits and don't rule the nation.
Is it just me, or could this be Nawaz Sharif's long lost brother? I must also unfortunately agree with Mawali's comment.
@Akhtar,In India,Our Country has an Army unlike in ur Pakistan where an Army has a Country...
Read it Twice to understand,It's Indian Creativity :-)
@ET,In Caption of Pic of Gen.Singh,"ONLY Second sikh........." Seems Pakistan has Dozens of Sikh army Chief.
And what was the need of Highliting his religion when from his Pic,it is visible he is Sikh???? Ohhh!!! I forget,It is Pakistani News paper where ur religion count first, everything after this.
I hate to say, but the Indians have a better system pertaining the military as compared to ours. There are no coups, military interference, etc.
@Pakistani First,Zinnah had promised and said many thing in 1947 about Pakistan and it's future Policy.Have all those fulfilled??? Remember 11 August Speech of Zinnah??
Indian Army is very secular, promotion is based on merit. When Pakistan had her first Sikh commissioned officer 2-Lt Harcharan Singh, India's Army Chief was a Sikh, General JJ Singh. General JJ Singh was born Pakistan.
@Zeeshan Khan and other fellow Pakis,He become army Chief not bcause he is from a Minority community(though common Indian don't c diff b/w Hindu and Sikh) but because of his merit, his selfless service towards institution. Our Air chief is Christian. Our Army institution is ultra Secular as it is our Pride. It does not differentiate on religious basis to anyone, unlike Pakis army, when it was Killing Hindus in East Pakistan as well as Muslims by saying,"U r sons of Hindu".
TrueMuslim : I think there was typographical error in your message. I am sure you wanted to mention "Pakistan" but instead mentioned "India". Let us see how I arrived at this conclusion "A country where Muslims are massacred everyday" I think there was something like 40000 muslims died in pakistan during the last few years due to WOT. Compare that to the no of muslims killed in India ,"genocide is carried out against tamilians, christians, Gujrati Muslims, where Muslims can’t by a house" That is precisely why there are no tamilians in Pakistan, christians can be counted etc Muslims can' by a house because they all want to get out of Pakistan and they are not safe there in Pakistan Now, get the point ?
@TrueMuslim: "A country where Muslims are massacred everyday, genocide is carried out against tamilians, christians, Gujrati Muslims, where Muslims can’t by a house, Kashmir women are raped daily???!! Are we so fooled by biased shining India???"
Let us go statement by statement. 1. Ni Muslims are NOT massacred everyday. What is the basis of this statement or are you thinking of Shias in Pakistan? 2. There is no insurgency movement by the Tamils i India. PErhaps it is the Sri Lankan Tamils you are thinking of. 3. The last Hindu Muslim riot in Gujarat and also i India was in 2002 - 10 years back.Even the Gujarat riots cannot be described as a genocide because both Hindus and Muslims died thogh in that particular riot more Muslims diedthan Hindus. You are probably aware that those riots were triggered by a Muslim mob burning 59 Hindu pilgrims. In other words it was not unprovoked by any means. 4. You are probably referring to Shabana Azmi's statement about not being able to buy a home. Yes. In a particular building they would not sell her a flat because that society was owned by Jains equally there are places in GOa where the Christians will not sell a home t Hindu. That has to do with the fact that certain communities like to keep certain neighbourhoods for themselves. But Shabana , Shah Rukh, Salman, Saif, Amir and millions of other Muslims can and DO own homes in India. There is no law preventing it. 5. As for Christian there are no Hindu Christian riots even let alone genocide. Yes there was a problem in Orissa in a non-violent manner. Such incidents are rare and are dealt with the full force of the law.
lol..its cute how indians are bragging about their minorities record ;p if we are disregarding the violence against minorities and considering only the appointments, then i would like to mention our very own justice Rana Bhagwandas(Hindu),current chairman FPSC, former justice of Supreme Court..Justice A.R.Cornelius (Christian), Justice Dorab Patel (Parsi) etc
but arjun, you are wrong when you say "This is not a big news in India"....from what i have heard a big deal was made of his daughter-in-law's nationality...people 'accused' her of being a pakistani citizen & thus considered her father-in-law to be a poor choice (apparently cross-border marriages appeal to you guys only in the movies ;p ;p)
here indian newspaper http://www.dnaindia.com/india/reportlt-gen-bikram-singh-is-new-army-chief1658047
@zeeshan khan: "woah, the indians made a person from the minorities their army chief in a country where over 80% of the population is hindu. Can we even think of having something similar in our country? can we ever have a hindu, christian or parsi army chief ?".
Not just the Chief of Army Staff but the Prime Minister to is a Sikh. Defence Minister is a Christian. Chief Justice of India is a Parsi and The Vice President of India is a Muslim. As you knpwwe have also had 3 Muslim PResidents in the past.
Singh is King !!!
At the time of independence Jinnah offered to reserve the post of army chief for the Sikh community if they decided to join Pakistan. True story
Indian are proud of their soldiers, but we know that it is the system which is above and not individuals.
@TrueMuslim: Genocide is a uniquely Pakistani art. First it was Bengalis, Hindus and Sikhs. Now its Baloch, Shias, Hazara, Ahmadiyyas and Christians. Focus is already shifting from the minority religion to the minority sect of the state's religion. Pretty soon it will be Deobandis v/s Barelvis.
Lo and Behold the army of Indians flooding this news. Yes we get it!
Less than 2% Sikhs in India.. and so visible... Prior to present Army Chief, India had a Sikh Army Chief who was the main character in break down of Saichan Talks between Pakistan and India. Amazing, less than 2% and hold PM position and many top police official. It is a very fashionable in Indian politician to do photo ops with Sikhs standing in Uniform behind them... Sikhs also head many Multi Nationals in India. What I am saying is that Sikhs which constitue around 1% of India's population have disapprotionate share in Armed Forces and Indian economy. It is time for India to make a Muslim a next Chief. Muslim constitute 13% in population in India. Other than poster Muslims, Muslim are no where in their share of India pie.
@TrueMuslim: A little truth, my dear friend, goes a long way in healing those wounds. How long can you get away with fabrications?
It is not the first time that minorities had prominent place in Indian Armed forces ,General Jacob who commanded Indian armies in Bangladesh sector during 1971 was a Jew . Marshal Sam Maneckshaw who was the army chief during the war was a Parsi.Air Chief Marshal Idris Hasan Latif (Chief of Indian Air force 1978-81) was head of Indian AirForce . http://www.indianexpress.com/oldStory/87825/ "A few names may help in refreshing public memory: Maj Gen E. Habibullah (16th Cavalry, father of Wajahat Habibullah, IAS, secretary, Right to Information) and Lt Gen Sami Khan (Madras Regiment), both commandants of the National Defence Academy, are still fondly remembered by cadets of their times. Lt Gen Jameel Mahmood was GOC-in-C, Eastern Command, when he died with his wife in a helicopter crash. His brother-in-law, Lt Gen M.A. Zaki, served as security adviser to the Government of Jammu and Kashmir, while his son is Colonel Adil Mahmood, 16th Cavalry, commandant of the President’s Bodyguard.
Late General Mahmood’s younger brother retired as a major general, while Zaki’s younger brother is a brigadier. Maj Gen Afsir Karim (retd), brother of Major Anwar Karim (who was one of two officers — the other was Brig M. Usman, who died defending Jhangar, Jammu & Kashmir during the 1947-48 war — actively wooed by Pakistan to opt for it with the promise of top ranks in Pakistan Army), is a well-known military scholar, who commanded 11 Infantry Division, headquartered in Ahmedabad. This post was also held in recent years by Lt Gen Z.U. Shah, brother of actor Naseeruddin Shah, who is currently GOC, 3 Corps. Their cousin is Colonel M.A. Shah of 73rd Armoured Regiment. The former army chief, Gen N.C. Vij’s military attache is a Muslim officer of the Dogra Regiment. A former Indian Air Force Chief, Air Chief Marshal Idrees Hasan Latif, became governor of Maharashtra."
It has been to India's advantage that the armed forces have been apolitical and professional. One of the commentators wrote in the past that there is a tight civilian dictatorship over the army which is unheard of in a third world country . Are you aware of any country in the world which progressed under military dictatorship?
@ Zeeshan khan
In Hindu majority India, currently the head of the ruling Congress Party, Mrs Sonia Gandhi is of Catholic origin, the prime Minister Mr Manmohan Singh is a Sikh emigrant (born in Gah, Pakistan), the current President of India succeeded a Muslim, Dr APJ Abdul Kalam the.current Vice President is Mohammad Hamid Ansari. Past Muslim presidents were Dr Zakir Hussain, Mr Fakharuddin Ali Ahmad. Mr Mohammad Hidayatullah also acted as President for a short while.I am sure there are numerous other members of minorities is high posts. General Bikram's choice must have been on merit.(I do not think he is related to the P.M.). So India with all its faults values its people on merit and not on religious basis. Indeed Pakistan could learn something from its cousins across the Eastern border.
@zeeshan khan "...can we ever have a hindu, christian or parsi army chief ?"
The answer is No, not in a thousand years. @Mawali "Hate to judge a crook by his cover, but he seems to fit the profile to a tee."
Why is it so? any proof? a refference at the least? @Babar "Punjabis rule the Army, both sides of the border."
Correction. On one side the Army rules the country, on the other, the country rules the army. Hope you know who is what.
The facts that he belongs to a religious community which represents less than 1% of Indian populace and his daughter-in-law being Muslim didn't come in the way of him being awarded the job speaks volume of India's secular credentials. I am aware of the fact that we are not yet there; we still have to overcome Modis and Geelanis, but we are in the right direction and we will be there, hope sooner than later.
Our Generals refuse to retire till they become President. Can anyone name the Generals who headed the Army / ISI & their tenure not extended?
India should be our role model?!! A country where Muslims are massacred everyday, genocide is carried out against tamilians, christians, Gujrati Muslims, where Muslims can't by a house, Kashmir women are raped daily???!! Are we so fooled by biased shining India???
@zeeshan khan: Just to carry on your observation. The head of Indian airforce is an Christian as is the indian defence minister. A Parsi was chief of staff during the Bangladesh war. And a previous head of Indian missiles program was Dr Abdul Kalam a muslim. Compare and contrast!
@Zeeshan - Having grown up in a small city in India - I can say with utmost conviction that hardly anyone sees sikhs as minority - they are always seen as a integral part and parcel of the society and no less or more important than any other cross-section of the society at large. I know there'll be people pointing towards sikh riots of 1984 and Khalistan movement - but I am talking from the perspective of an ordinary urban Indian - not from the perspective of political leaders who engineer these things to gain their meagre advantages - and I'll say this about Indian muslims as well - though the level of inter-mingling is not as high as with other communities - but if one happens to have muslim friends (through studying together / working together etc) - then the boundaries of religion just seem to melt away in front of a personal relationship. From my personal experience I can say that some of the best times I had while growing up were with people from all possible religious backgrounds - including muslim friends and I am really really thankful for having that experience in life of growing up in a multi-cultural environment and being capable of judging a person on their personal merits rather than the tag of religion that all of us carry.
Are you reading this Gen Kayani and Gen Pasha..? Smooth transition from one general to the next in an armed force which is 4 times larger than ours..
No nonsense about extensions, retaining the relationships, continuity of role etc etc.
Our generals just cant give up the chair, once they get into it...
If we as a nation need to progress, prosper and look at acquiring institutional maturity, we must look towards India. That is the nation that must be our role model rather than our much-hyped-higher-than-mountain-all-weather-friend "China" which does not have same people, language, culture, system of governance and trade liberalisation as India.
When on earth would we get it ...? Scratching my head..
Why are Pakistanis so obsssed with Indian defence establishment and RAW?
@Babar: this is the problem with you people. Our army chief leads, he, or hopefully she at some future date, DOES NOT RULE anyone. Your army chiefs, politicians, mullahs are all rulers not leaders. Open your eyes someday to how civilized humanity lives, listen to Najam Sethi and other sane folk once in a while. Otherwise you are doomed to be a camel herder all your life.
This is not a big news in India. I will be surprised if this news makes it to the front page. Not a big deal in India, who will be the army chief. Whoever it is, he is a public servant and he will wait for PM's appointment.
Democracy in action. In Pakistan , an army chief has an average tenure of 6 years and no one can replace him , whereas in India , an army chief is answerable to the government and can replaced anytime.
This is called, "civilian control" over the army...
@Babar: Punjabis rule the Army, both sides of the border. :) Why do you have to look everything through religion/sect/region glasses? Not sure about your country but Indian Army appointments are based on merit. Lt. General Bikram Singh is an Indian. Keep your divisional views to yourself.
Sincerely!
@zeeshan khan: he is sikh ...majority of sikhs are living in india....have they had any muslim army chief ,cannot be and will not be!!!
@Babar; This guy is only the second sikh to hold this position. @Mohammad Ali Siddiqui: 'singing' is good; but only some singhs are sikhs. this one is and the former one is not.
@zeeshan khan: lol, the difference being that Sikhs are OVER-represented in the Army, something like nearly 50% of the Army when they make 3% of the population, so that's why they give so many high ranked officers/chief of army/etc... also, has to say, sardars are Punjab di shaan, perhaps the only consensus in the whole South Asia. :P
Our kakul commanders should learn from transition of power in Indian Armed forces. No nautanki, no dramabazi, no jockeying for extension.
@Mohammad Ali Siddiqui: Singh is king ;)..
@zeeshan khan: kayani is a baloch, for your information. zardari is also a baloch!!
@zeeshan khan: "woah, the indians made a person from the minorities their army chief in a country where over 80% of the population is hindu. Can we even think of having something similar in our country? can we ever have a hindu, christian or parsi army chief ?"
Not just the army chief our Prime Minister is also a Sikh (minority). Our Chief justice of the supreme court Sarosh Wadia is a Parsi (minority). Our defence minister - the army chief's boss A K Antony isa Christian (minority). Our Vice President is a Muslim (and you probably know we have had a Muslim President 3 times in the past).
I suppose Indian army chief do retire whereas in Pakistan they either get extension or another job and few lucky ones who hang around longer get a basket of mangoes.
Good to see a turban guy as Army Cheif.Well they deserve too look at the history there are more number of people fought and died for their country ... India.
@Pakistan politics: RAW keeps removing my posted comments.
A U.S. admiral when disclosing that U.S. special forces are stationed in India said they are 'not necessarily Department of Defense' but other agencies. These are CIA teams with the mission of snatching or neutralizing India's nuclear warheads, as similar CIA teams successfully did in Pakistan. Unless India's nuclear forces trigger India's nuclear warheads emplaced in New Delhi, Washington and New York without further delay (see my blog 'Nuclear Supremacy For India Over U.S.' which can be found by a Yahoo/Google search with the title), the result will be worse than in Pakistan because India's RAW and other forces work for the CIA . I have said Bikram Singh, who has been designated as the Army chief beginning May 31 '12 is a CIA-RAW man and that must not be allowed. India's CIA-RAW government has been in a hurry to bring him in as Army Chief to try and take India's nuclear warheads away from patriotic hands and in the hands of traitors. Satish Chandra
@Babar:
One minor difference - Punjabis on one of the border take their orders from the elected govt. and Punjabis on the other side give orders to the elected govt.!

@Mohammad Ali Siddiqui: "The outgoing chief is also a Singh and the incoming chief is also Singh. One Singh is replacing the other Singh. I think that it is time for me to Sing.."
One more of the listed candidates was, Sing. All these guys, come from Sing Sing or what? I am just relaxing.
@Zeeshan Singh Since when did Sikhs become minority in India? And by the way, when a Muslim becomes army chief then talk.
At the time of independence Jinnah offered to the Sikh community that if they join Pakistan the post of the army chief would be reserved for a Sikh. True Story
@Babar: "Punjabis rule the Army, both sides of the border. :)" Are we glad that is the case. It keeps the rest of us safer because 'they' cancel each other out. And the rest of us concentrate on 'better' and 'bigger' things. They get to pretend they are the elite, while we play meek and inherit the earth. Wonderful! Let's just keep up with this charade / arrangement. I suppose, that my warped sarcasm and logic, exposes this shallow sense of self aggrandizement.
@zeeshan khan: u r a very pessimist u comments are filled with hatred and bias
@Babar: " ... Punjabis rule the Army, both sides of the border. :) ... "
That also makes the Pakistani Punjabi a Baluchi's favourite community.
@zeeshan khan: Bholay shah, you are forgetting Pakistan is an Islamic Republic built on the name of Islam, to defend Islam and its ideology.
Pakistan recently had a Hindu Chief Justice of Supreme court of Pakistan if that helps you. His name Rana Bhagwandas.
@Babar: I also understand that respect and loyalty is given to the elder brother in Punjab. So is the tiny little brother going to listen to his elder brother?
Punjabis rule the Army, both sides of the border. :) but at one side they are only staunch muslims who do so :(
Punjabis rule the Army, both sides of the border. :)
@Mawali: It takes a crook to go looking for a crook!
What a change?
The outgoing chief is also a Singh and the incoming chief is also Singh.
One Singh is replacing the other Singh.
I think that it is time for me to Sing..
Hate to judge a crook by his cover, but he seems to fit the profile to a tee.
woah, the indians made a person from the minorities their army chief in a country where over 80% of the population is hindu. Can we even think of having something similar in our country? can we ever have a hindu, christian or parsi army chief ?
@Satish Chandra: u were saying this man should not be made Army chief he is a CIA stooge and this man is a threat to Indian nuclear program, whats ur point of view now??
