Zardari accords assent for new university in Islamabad

President Asif Ali Zardari accords assent to the Shifa Tameer-e-Millat University Act 2012.

ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari on Friday accorded his assent to the Shifa Tameer-e-Millat University Act 2012, paving the way for the establishment of the institution in Islamabad.

The act was passed by the National Assembly on January 16 and the Senate on February 10.

Zardari while giving his assent to the act expressed hope that the university will focus on training and capacity building of teachers. He said that there was a dire need to focus on teacher training in view of the critical role they had in building human capital.

The university has been envisioned to be a non-profit institution in the private sector to impart education in health and other sciences.

The chancellor will be elected by the Chancellor Election Council from amongst its members. The council will comprise of members from the Board of Governors of the Shifa Foundation and Tameer-e-Millat Foundation.
