Students from various parts of the country showcased their expertise in digital media at the fifth Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology (GIKI) Media Festival, which concluded on Sunday.

Students from 47 educational institutes participated in the three-day event, in which they presented short films, poster designs, photographs, short commercials, animations and T-shirt designs.

“It is amazing to be here and share experiences and ideas with other students,” said Komal Dilshad, a student representing Fatima Jinnah Women University (FJWU) in poster, T-shirt and photography competitions.

She was of the view that the festival had given a unique opportunity to students to exhibit their work and learn from others sharing similar interests.

Suha, another student from International Islamic University (IIUI), also appreciated the event, saying that she had learnt a lot in the past three days.

“These events are a great way for talented students to come forward and showcase their work. At the same time, they give an idea of what other people are doing,” said Maheen Mukhtar, another student.

Muawizur Rehman, a student of Foundation University, was of the view that there is no platform for people having interest in media arts even though the industry is rapidly growing in Pakistan. However, he seemed optimistic about the future of media-related ventures and expressed interest in working in media after completing his studies.

The event was organised by the GIKI Media Club, a student body which has been holding the festival for the past five years to provide a platform to students to showcase their creativity and interact with others.

After a slew of workshops and competitions, students were also rewarded for their hard work and enthusiasm with a memorable performance by Shehzad Roy on Saturday.

Bilal Muhammad Faqir, a student of Fast-NU Lahore, won the poster design competition, while Bilal Firoz from Centre for Advanced Studies in Engineering won the T-shirt design competition. Komal Dilshad of FJWU won the on-spot photography competition, while Fawad Khan of Ripah University was declared the winner in the short film category.

Sabahat Khan of Punjab University’s College of Arts and Design (PUCAD) won the photo essay competition, while Saad Iqbal and Muhammad Esa, also from PUCAD, won the photography exhibition competition and ‘Punjabi totay’ respectively.

Uzma Hanif of IIUI and Suha Khan of PUCAD were declared as winners in the short commercial and animation categories respectively.
