In fact, carrying the jealous husband analogy further, I would say that what we see happening in Balochistan these days is like an angry husband beating up his wife, the wife screaming for help, while the husband gets angry upon seeing the neighbours running to help and protect the wife. Instead of correcting his ways, he starts berating the neighbours, screaming at them to mind their own business. And in that context, if the beating of up a woman symbolises a man’s cowardice, then brutalising an ethnic minority, made up of its own people, also reflects a state’s cowardice and shame.
Unfortunately, ours is a history marked with lies, distortions, exaggerations and false glorification. Can’t we at least pay attention to some bitter truths and grim reminders? For all the flak that US Congressman Dana Rohrabacher (Republican from California) is getting from Pakistan’s media and official circles, the fact is that he is gaining popularity by the day, especially among the young people of Balochistan, some of whom have already set up a Facebook fan page for him. At last count, he had over 3,000 fans and this number will only rise.
So, the news channels are fooling and misleading the country when they show a ‘patriotic Pakistani’ from Islamabad or Khyber-Pakhtunkhawa, instead of a talking to a Baloch from Gwadar, condemning the developments taking place in Washington DC. Why is there such reluctance to trust the Baloch and speak to them to learn what has alienated them and what they demand? When was the first (and probably the last) time when the whole country demonstrated unity to address what is happening in Balochistan? How many long marches, breaking news stories and parliamentary resolutions are going to happen before the government addresses the matter at hand?
Let’s stop the ‘internal affair’ drama and focus on some historical facts? Since Pakistan’s inception, Islamabad has spied on the Baloch. Perhaps the Baloch did not respond to the fact that they were treated unequally and disrespectfully but over time they became pained by being billed as Russian, Indian, Afghan and even Iraqi agents. Of course, now they are going to be treated as ‘CIA agents’! Did Islamabad ever embrace the Baloch as respectful and dependable citizens of the land who could be trusted and given ownership and responsibility?
Surely, we all remember what happened in 1973 when the first-ever elected Baloch government was dismissed. As if disregard for the Baloch mandate of provincial government was not enough, the people of the province were then subjected to a horrendous military operation on the charge of having ‘extra-marital affairs’ with foreign countries. In six decades, Islamabad has not been able to present undisputed proof of Balochistan’s unfaithfulness while there are countless accounts of the formers patriarchal arrogance towards the province.
An ardent pro-Pakistan leader like Nawab Akbar Bugti was killed on suspicion of getting ‘foreign assistance’. Former chief minister Akhtar Mengal was literally put into an iron cage because General Musharraf thought he was not sufficiently patriotic. Bramdagh Bugti was called an ‘Indian agent’, and his sister and niece were killed. Hundreds of young Baloch have been found dead in recent months, dumped along roads in the province.
While a troubled relationship between a mother-in-law and her daughter-in-law can endure despite all flaws, marriage between a quarrelling couple has a painful, yet, internationally and legally acceptable choice: divorce. The Pakistani ‘patriots’ should ask themselves that are their actions pushing Balochistan to the brink of divorce.

@Mustafa Moiz:
"akistan barely had the staff to run the country, let alone go around rigging referendums. And the Baloch decision was through a Jirga, so how do we rig a Jirga?"
Yes, Pakistan did rig the jirga in Balochistan. What you are taught in your school textbooks are blatantly fabricated and false history. If you are really interested in knowing the truth about Balochistan's "accession", just do an honest research. To start, read this:
http://www.viewpointonline.net/balochistan-betrayed.html
@Shahzad Kazi: And I have already explained why that is so.
@Truthbetold: Pakistan barely had the staff to run the country, let alone go around rigging referendums. And the Baloch decision was through a Jirga, so how do we rig a Jirga?
@Truthbetold: Which history books have you been reading? Where are you references for this claim? And dont just paste an internet link in reply.
@ Indian,Mumbai kid,Pun,Sanjeev---I was of the opinion that we could live in peace like good neighbours but your pungent comments have made me think otherwise, though I have not lost hope yet,but I am afraid I am wrong to consider that we can have good relations when people of your mindset are there
@Mustafa Moiz:
"The Baloch willingly accepted joining Pakistan, and those who say otherwise are blatantly lying."
That is a big lie. The Khan of Kalat wanted an independent Balochistan. Jinnah sent in the army to force the Khan to sign accession papers. Pakistan held farce referendums in Balochistan and Pakhtunkwa which were boycotted by most of the natives. If you are really interested in the truth and facts, you will find that the Pakistan's have been fed lies for over six decades.
@Mustafa Moiz: Your assertions are incorrect. All the occupiers have the same view, "we are here to free the oppressed", "the locals are uneducated and do not understand what they need, so we will decide for them".
This is what every dominating group says to justify and perpetuate their rule. The solution is economic development and giving rights to locals. Balauchistan produces natural gas, but Quetta was amongst the last cities to get piped gas. The province is the richest and has the lowest population, but has the poorest people. We need to learn from East Pakistan and make sure that the same mistakes are not repeated.
Dear Indian... lets have a peaceful divorce in Kashmir and other parts of India where the people want their rights... Bihar, Manipur, Assam, Tripura, Mizoram... look at your own yard becoming jumping up on down on Baluchistan...
The disgraceful US congressman who has no power beyond calling useless resolutions, should first question India whose foreceful and disgraceful subjugation of a state that has nothing in common with the rest of India first, at least Baloch are Muslim, with the same culture and language and customs and clothes and food etc....
What do Kashmiris have in common with Hindus in Delhi and Mumbai?
Fact is this congressman is on Indian salary and doing their bidding as a subservient doggy. If he was honest, he would speak of Kashmiri independance in the same breath as Baluch problem, the two problems have no comparison.
There are 19 million Muslims in Kashmir, 98 % of Kashmir is Muslim, there are 700,000 Indian paramilitary soldiers in Kashmir, 60,000 Kashmiris have been killed by Indian forces since 1999.
Baluchistan has a combined population of just over 9 million Baloch, there are only 15,800 paramilitary troops in Balochistan, 99.5% Baloch are Muslim, 97.5 % Pakistanis are Muslim, in th epast 10 years only 3250 Baloch rebels have been killed, whereas 850 Punjabi civilians and paramilitary have been killed by the rebels in the same time.
@wonderer: Sorry, I missed out a sentence. People loyal to Brahamdagh Bugti have killed 180 Bugtis using IEDs. So this man is clearly not working in the interests of Balochis.
I can see the parallel with East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) clearly. In early 1970 you had ZAB & Yahya Khan and you saw what happened. Call it 'quare'lling couple' or incest or any other name, the end result will be for all to see. Pakistanis are wasting their energies & resources in fighting the Baloches just as they have done to Bengalis and with India. You have no time left to live in peace and prosper.
@Troll Alert: I would not know about India mate.
I have not read such an article which describe the situation of Baluchistan so clearly. Unfortunately, one wife of this jealous husband has already run away from home in 1971, after being brutally beaten up. Even after Baluchistan, this husband has 2 more wives to suspect.
Time to liberate Balohistan from the Feudal sardars.
World politics ......... National politics ............. Local politics ............... who cares for the people anyway? .............. ONLY ORDINARY HUMAN BEINGS WILL CARE FOR EACH OTHER AS ONE HUMAN BEING FOR ANOTHER ............. each one of us feel the pain of the Baloch , each one of us speak up for them, each one of us do whatever we can for them ........... respect and accept each other ......... ALL OF US .......... is that so hard?
To the Indian commentators: look at your own country guys....multitude of problems....and please dont deny that you dont have problems because I know it, I visit India and have many friends accross the border as well as in a foriegn country where I work.
Pakistan may have its own problems but we are very much capable of handling them on our own. And Yousaf is right, you have not seen your madness, we are a national of people who are generous. we have seen two major floods and a massive earth quake, and came out of these disasters. Whatever you have seen of our madness is only maybe 5%. You had not seen our madness when we didnt sleep for days on end to provide faciliteis for the affectees. I wish you could see that.
As for the Baloch part, they are part of Pakistan. I wish things normalize for the betterment of the entire country.
Let not the Indians and Pakistanis get into the usual game of exchanging charges and countercharges. It is noteworthy that Baloch Republican Party’s self-exiled chief Brahamdagh Bugti, the grandson of Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti has clearly said, "We have been accused of getting support from India but the Baloch movement does not have any foreign support." (see todays report in ET). Let us accept this as true.
This issue of Baluchistan has become very serious and urgent all of a sudden. It should not be taken lightly. Separation of Baluchistan from Pakistan is a distinct possibility now. The blame game should be stopped and all efforts concentrated on saving the situation. All it needs is to treat the Baloch as Pakistani citizens like all others. What their grievances are cannot be termed as false and ignored.
I am a Punjabi and i condemn the ethnic cleansing and brutal killings of Punjabis and Urdu speaking in Balochistan. However, I feel that the Baloch people have legitimate grievances, they have been suppressed and brainwashed by their feudal sardars as it is, but our army and our government have denied them their rights, exploited and mistreated them and viciously suppressed any dissent. This, in return, has led to feelings of ill will and violence towards all Punjabis as Punjab is (somewhat rightly) perceived as the big brother who rules the roost. To all my Baloch brothers and sisters, we sympathize with you and love you, we do not want another mistake like Bangladesh. We apologize for our condemnable behvaiour, but the actions have been undertaken by our government and army. For us people, we must strive to raise awareness and force our leaders to accept our joint demand i.e give Balochistan its rights and end ALL violence against Baloch, Punjabis, etc
There must be issues by virtue of whicih we have come to the point that our internal matter is being discussed on international forum. BTW, which area of Pakistan has been treated fairly? It is not just Balochistan that is deprived of its due share, but that certainly doesn't justify thinking about disintegrating our home. We are being ruled by a class which has brought this country to this point and their unfair practices have been benificial for themselves only which resulted in frustration that kept on creeping over the years among the 'ruled class'.
@ Ali Wali: Unhappy marriages are not uncommon in India either :D
Here come our friendly neighbours...can you believe the amount of ill will they have towards us and our country? They wish us suffering, pain and turmoil...and yet they want us to believe that they and their government are friendly towards us. What a joke!
@Mustafa Moiz:
In the age of internet you can easily read how and why Balochistan joined union of Pakistan. Also you can learn why there are two Balochistans, one called Pakistani Balochistan and other Iranian Balochistan. And who was the great power at that time to do that. My son it is easy to change Geography or even religion but the identity always stays the same. Punjabi is always a punjabi wheather a muslim or sikh or wheather is from east/west punjab. It is so simple. If Balochis had decided to join with Federation of Pakistan, then they can also opt to leave Pakistan peacefully without being killed by Punjabi mercenaries. If the word mercenaries is offensive to you then the read the history about the role of these "brave fighters" during World War I/II and recently in Jordan and Saudi Arabia. It has always taken a longer painfull period of struggle for weaker nations/communities to get their goals, but it does happen. History proves that.
@Mustafa Moiz: willing joining Pakistan should not be taken for granted, that never meant we have licence to mistreat them. Baloch are our brothers, and they should be stake holders in Center.
It means it is little domestic issue, unhappy marriages are not uncommon in Pakistan.
@Mustafa Moiz: Blatantly or otherwise history shows that you are LYING.
@ yousaf
Thx for letting us know there is more depth of madness that you all can achieve, my personal thought was you had reached the abyss.
BTW - Best of luck, give a try let the show begin.
A very hard hitting and well scribed article. It will be more appropriate if the author could jot down the grievances and their solutions.
@gp65: That is a lie, and a recent one at that. Pakistan accepted that Kalat was a independent state and entered into negotiations with it. But when Makran, Lasbela and Kharan all joined Pakistan willingly, Kalat saw its own geographic position severely weakened and joined Pakistan.
@Indian: I am a Baloch, and my advice to you and your 1.2 Billion people is to keep your filthy nose out of our business.
We don't need your support.
@Mustafa Moiz: baloch doesnt want punjabis inside balochistan as citizen.doesnt mind punjabis if they come with the same rights they have in countries like saudi arabia and other countries natural resource rich like balochistan.
@yousaf: entire world is seeing pakistani madness
The break up between Yugoslavia was very painful for all, but the very civil Divorce of Czech and Slovakia was appreciated the world over. In our case Bangladesh was also very bitter with neighbours coming to the rescue of the beaten spouse.
Now with East Timor and South Sudan having a very clinical Divorce, why not grant a KHULA to Baluchistan after all the Centre's nikah nama with the Baluchs is also a doubtful document
@Mustafa Moiz: You are a joker. Your mind is too indoctrinated by the establishment led media. What sardars are you talking about. Your army killed Akbar Bugti who was pro Pakistan and representing the demands of the Baloch which were totally justified. In his absence who are you going to talk to. who has the mandate to represent the Baloch. This army of ours has caused breakup of Pakistan earlier in shape of Bangladesh and now it's going to do it again. Shame on you and everyone else who can't speak up against the atrocities of our army against us.
@gp65: "Not true at all. Balochistan was not part of the British empire. Kalat was an independent kingdom"
WRONG! The states of Kalat, Makuran, Kharan, and Bela were all considered among the 500+ PRINCELY STATES that dotted across British India. There was also a province in north called British Baluchistan that had a Governor and was administered by the Quetta Municipal Board.
According to the Indian Independence Act of 1947, the agreements between the British and princely state rulers would be coming to an end on 15 Aug 1947 and the states (including the Baloch ones) had to choose either India or Pakistan.
Kharan, Makuran, Bela, and British Baluchistan all willingly and happily joined Pakistan soon after. Only the State of Kalat, a landlocked entity that was barely 20% of the entire Balochistan province, delayed because the Khan of Kalat was pressured by his family members to NOT join Pakistan... but eventually he signed the accession document.
Deal with it.
I know a big Baluchi Sardar, and he proudly admits they keep the people poor on purpose, or else they would get educated, get rich and stand shoulder to shoulder with them, the problem in Baluchistan is the sardars, not the govt or the people.
ewwww....looks like the gentleman has been watching too many soaps...maybe an interesting collection of facts but crappy analogies......
Being a Pakistani, I deeply feel sorry for the tragedies of my Balochi brethren. And I believe in their right of self-determination. But I must also caution that they should be watchful of strangers becoming friends all of a sudden. The world is full of pain. There are thousands of victims in the world whom no self-centered giant cares about. But when someone chooses to help you all of a sudden but not the others, there is much more to it than meets the eye.
@yousaf: "You have so far seen our politeness you have not seen our madness when someone crosses the limit of our patience" We are aware only of your madness so far, seriously looking fwd for any act of politeness form you, maybe things will really change for good.
@Mustafa Moiz: You can only get more 'likes' for your misleading remarks but it does not help in saving Balochistan.
I guess Mohammad Ali Sadiqui once said Mother in law for Hillary Bibi
lol, the facebook defense. so the zionist congressman has much in common with musharraf!
Has the author ever heard anything about “de-stabilization and disintegration of Pakistan by foreign agencies?” if Taliban can operate freely from Quetta what is the guarantee that CIA and their affiliates are not camped there grabbing any opportunity to inflict ethnic wounds and create a rift between Islamabad and Baluchistan. Pakistani intelligence agencies are handing over 900 terror suspects to KP government, no one will sit around and watch Baluchistan disintegrate into pieces, any baloch will prefer an internal solution to the problems then seeing an American congressman providing an “American democracy style” solution the problem.
@Mustafa Moiz: "The Baloch willingly accepted joining Pakistan, and those who say otherwise are blatantly lying"
Not true at all. Balochistan was not part of the British empire. Kalat was an independent kingdom and Pak army simply marched in and assimilated Balochistan into Pakistan. The other 3 provinces voted for Pakistan - Balochistan did not.
There are many issues in Baluchistan. Both sides are at fault. The federal govt and the Baluch Sardars. Neither has done anything for the common person in Baluchistan. That is the problem. To the Baluch who suddenly seem to love America, read what this Congressman said. He wants Baluchistan because it is rich in mineral resources and can be used to promote American interests in the region. He has no feelings for you. He wants to use you to promote an agenda where his country can control the mineral resources of the world. Have you forgotten why Iraq was invaded? Have you forgotten why Libiyan oil the finest in the world is now under Western control. Let's not be made fools of by America.
@Mustafa Moiz: Baluch leaders willingly joined a decentralized state called Pakistan, not the centralized state that calls itself Pakistan. To maintain that the two are the same is a form of linguistic tyranny.
@ Ahamad Punjabis are encroaching in Balochistan, if Punjabis are killed its retaliation of killing of Balochis, Read carefully what Shahjahan zahree mentioned in his post. In the name of development Army occupies lands of Gawader, distributed among army officers, serving and retired, why our honourable CJ has not take up that case of balochis against illegal distribution of lands in Gawader. there is big scam, but no sou motto against army personnel, This CJ is playing more like Punjabi CJ. He is one of those who migrated to Balochistan and on Fake domicile he got the job. Now he is called in Punjab the most honest CJ.
This is a wonderful article, very much clear, and not bias.
I am a Punjabi and have firm believe that Pakistan can only survive if we give full autonomy to all federating units and let them independently exploit their natural resources. This will put Punjab in a comfortable position to develop its water resources including Mega Dams. Besides, the defense expenditure should be minimized so that the funds should be utilized for poor masses. In fact, if we make peace with our neighbors, we do not need such a big army. We must evaluate whether we want to keep a big army or want to provide food and employment to our people. One thing more, we have to control the religious fanatics. In fact, we have to treat them like enemies of Pakistan, who are accelerating destruction of Pakistan. With prevailing situation, Pakistan cannot survive more than four or five years what to speak of separation of Baluchistan.
@yousaf: polite and you people! come on sir!
@Mustafa Moiz: Sir whatever that was but since then, 90% of Baloch people never loved to be called an Irani, a Pakistan or an Afgan but a Baloch. You guys cant understand it. For us, our ethnic identity (being Baloch) is as pure and divine as ones religion could be. I don't know where you guess get this that Sardars are pushing a common Baloch backward etc.
Today, Nawab Heyrbaksh Marri lost his well educated and handsome son Balach Marri. He could have enjoyed a really great life outside of Baluchistan any where in the world but he chose to fight for his people and gave his life in Balochistan.
Many other Sons of sardars are actually trying their part to get their people out of this jeopardy.
Yes, we all Muslims are brothers but that doesn't meant at all that Afghanistan should be merged with Pakistan. right?
@yousaf: you should learn the language first then you will understand my statement. And 2nd thing we have seen your madness 100 times in last sixty years so the "new madness" that you are talking about, will not surprise us.. :) all the best..
Dear writer, even though you mean well but your analogy of husband (Pakistan/Punjab) and wife (Baluchistan) is not a true representation of the facts, this is actually a case of incest.
@shahjahan zehree: So then the Baloch approach was similar to that of the KKK in America? Murdering hundreds of Punjabis because of their different culture? And the Baloch have been enslaved for a long time by the Sardars, the State has been trying to break their power in the last few years, so the Sardars have waged war. The Punjabis who come to Balochistan are helping in the development of the province and in return are being murdered by thugs and terrorists. They have taken jobs high up as well as lowly jobs such as sweepers and whatnot, tasks which the Baloch consider below them to undertake.
@Solomon2: So they did willingly join Pakistan. At least that is not disputed.
@Indian--So,you have a hand in Baloachistan as you say.I do not like to say this but as you insist go ahead give it a try.You have so far seen our politeness you have not seen our madness when someone crosses the limit of our patience
The Balochistan affair has come close to being ethnic cleansing and PAK people are turning blind eye.
@Mustafa Moiz: not 1200 hundred you figures are wrong these can be more than that no one denies. contemplate why were they killed???? because balochs had threat of their culture which would get mixed with in no time, 2nd balochs were just recruited in small posts while punjabies were ruling on them in the shape of dc, sho, and edo etc. balochs are still being treated as slave on their on land. and as for your statement regarding merging of balochistan is concerned that was decision of individual not of state which he later on declared his blunder. and baloch youth demands for elimination of so-called sardars, unfortunately, sardars are enjoying favor of establishment which keeps their domination perpetual on innocent baloch nation, if the govt had rectified its mistakes america would never bother to pass resolution still time is their..............................................
keeing this analogy in mind, the separtion has already been done, the rest is merely technicalities ,matter of time and about details.Anyway thank you Dear for refreshing the issue from a new dimention.
Since pakistanis have made this issue international by deliberately injecting "Indian hand" into it. Let me express very clearly that based upon historical facts balochistan is under forced occupation of pakistan. And time has come for "divorce". And since you guys have always mentioned our name, therefore now we all 1.2 billion people of this planet are with baloch people.
Let us have a peaceful divorce.
The Centre has been thrashing the Baloch on and off for sixty years. It's no wonder they wish for a divorce.
"The Baloch willingly accepted joining Pakistan, and those who say otherwise are blatantly lying."
Check your history: didn't the Baloch willing join a Pakistan that promised them autonomy, a promise repeated in the 1973 Constitution?
Very true, it is not the relationship between husband and wife rather master and batman(not the comic hero). On the other hand if there would have been long marchs for zarina marri and other baloch missing persons and against voilations of basic human rights, balochs would have felt they are not alone, but because this time it is coming from US so it is more antiamerican rhetoric rather supporting baloch people in these painful times.
@Mustafa Moiz: pls come out of this text book lesson .we are no more fools i love my sardar but i dont follow his political vision i love him because atleast he is amongst us as compare to punjabi DC its 2012 information age not punjab text book board lessons
US's dodgy senators have done a big favour to Pakistan through their useless resolution. . It has put 'Baloch rights' on the defensive!
The Baloch willingly accepted joining Pakistan, and those who say otherwise are blatantly lying. The responsibility for the ills of the Baloch people lies with the Sardars, who are suddenly being lionized in some of the so-called "liberal" media for their treason. The Pakistani state is genuinely trying to develop Balochistan, and remove power from the Sardars, who have enslaved their people. In reply, the Sardars have managed to convince a number of the Baloch that the state is trying to colonize them for their resources. Also, why are only Baloch deaths ever mentioned? Why not the murders of Punjabis and Urdu-speakers, which I believe have numbered around 1200 in the past four years?
very good
