A senior member of Imran Khan’s party of self-professed ‘clean politicians’ has come under scrutiny. The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has started investigations against a senior leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf for accumulation of assets beyond known sources of income, officials said.
Malik Naveed Khan allegedly embezzled millions of rupees in the procurement of arms for the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa police at exorbitant prices on the pretext of fighting terrorism, they added.
“He (Naveed), who served as inspector general police K-P, allegedly made Rs25 million in an arms purchase deal worth Rs6 billion with a Chinese firm during his tenure,” a member of an executive board of NAB told The Express Tribune.
The decision to start investigations against Naveed was taken in a board meeting on Wednesday, which also approved investigations against deputy IGP K-P Khurshid Alam, in the same case.
Naveed, who is now pursuing a political career with the PTI, is working with his close friend, head of PTI’s scrutiny committee in the province, Rustam Shah Mohmand.
The PTI leader, however, told The Express Tribune, that all cases against him are politically motivated. “It’s an effort to malign my party, which is fighting against corruption,” Naveed said.
NLC scam
The board meeting also decided to initiate an inquiry against the chief financial officer of the National Logistic Cell (NLC), Saeedur Rehman, for misuse of authority, wherein huge losses were incurred by the placement of public funds in the stock exchange for investment.
The board also decided to form a joint inquiry team with the GHQ to form a joint strategy against army and civilian officials involved in the NLC scandal.
NAB’s prosecutor will be the communication officer in the investigation, which will be carried out by the bureau and the Judge Advocate General (JAG) branch of the army.
NAB has already decided to issue arrest warrants against three former military generals allegedly involved in a multi-billion rupee scam at the NLC – a move that may result in the first ever prosecution of military personnel in a civilian court.
NAB officials, however, told The Express Tribune that GHQ is yet to respond to a letter sent by the authority regarding the current status of the inquiry conducted on the directions of the army chief.
NAB had written a letter to GHQ seeking action against Lt Gen (retd) Khalid Munir Khan, Lt Gen (retd) Mohammad Afzal Muzaffar and Maj Gen (retd) Khalid Zaheer Akhtar. The military officials have been held responsible in the Hamid Hassan report and the AGP`s audit report for corruption to the tune of billions of rupees in the NLC through illegal and unauthorised loans. An illegal loan of Rs4.3 billion was taken by its management between 2004 and 2008 for investment in the stock exchange that caused losses of Rs1.84 billion to the national exchequer.
ISPR spokesperson Maj General Athar Abbas told The Express Tribune that investigations in the NLC case are about to be completed. He, however, did not disclose when the report would be presented to the Ministry of Defence.

But they should set an example by suspending his membership till he comes out of this clean. This is what will show them as a mature party. Hope they do this.
when ever PTI will be fairly scrutinized 50 percent will be NAB defaulters will come out from Sir IK,s party. As many parties have cleaned their dirt and PTI is accumulating all. well done u need no enemy
Fully agree with Rana about Imran K.
We Pakistanis are TRULY very innocent & niave people since every leader makes a fool out of us & moves on! Just like ZAB with his very catching slogan of "Roti Kapra Aur Makan" than came the defender of Islam Mard a Momin Zia ul Haq who used & exploited Islam in every possible way. Than BB & NS had brief periods calling for "Liberalization of Economy" & did achieved something. Later Mushy came with his rubber stick & did achieve something in economic terms. Now PPP under AZ came & tried to cash BBs Shahadat. Ex-playboy IK wanted a piece of cake since he think he is a God gift to human mankind besides the biggest hypocrat this country has ever produced. Now people think that he will solve all their problems without realizing the is totally shallow.
I do not know about the charges. He might be involved in commissions like majority of beurocrates/politicians. But accountibility process should be accross the board and not selected one as apparent in the case. Moreover, if PML and PPP are too serious in independent accoutability then why they did not approve accountibility bill with 20th amendment. PTI should be more careful now as all status quo parties are united in their venture.
@IFTIKHAR-UR-REHMAN: he can suspend his membership till NAB investigates him
@sashayub Because thousands are joining PTI daily. PTI cannot scrutinize them. But when ticket will be awarded.
NAB should go after each person no matter what post he or she should ever held or holds presently. Believe me we will see 99% naked it this pool of politics and business. Accountability should also chase our most holy cows.
@Blithe
I am well aware of what it is, i think the definition of troll doesnt involve 'anyone supporting PTI' , it would seem from most of the discussions that it does!
He should be Tried IF he is Involved. That is what PTI believes in: Justice, Humanity, Self Esteem.
Is it a news item or opinion piece? I am confused. ET, please clarify and get you reporters some refresher course in Journalism ethics and code of conduct.
ET is so biased and gives wrong impression about PTI. I think ET is playing a very dangerous game here. Anyway people know now how ET swings from article to article.
This guy was never a senior leader of PTI.
Anyway we know how you play these dirty tricks and we don't care as the truth always prevail!!!
A senior leader? Anyways if he is guilty he should be fired by PTI.
Trust Musharraf and vote for him
Another attempt by ET to distort facts and damage PTI's image. Give PTI a break ET. I've never heard of this guy before and from what I know he only joined PTI in Dec 10. Given that nobody has heard of this guy before, he's definitely not a senior figure in PTI ranks. So get your facts right and stop distorting reality
@Hassan: A troll is someone who lacks logic and does not belive in learning anything from history.
Not surprised given all the riffraff joining "the shiny vessel" of PTI - it will end up being as corrupt as PPP.
@Qaiser k. Ahmed: Look IK is no God that he knows everything about a person joining his party.I had heard about this case after the retirement of this guy.It has been a while since then.I wonder what NAB was doing since then.IK may have missed this news or he may have been mislead but stop criticing on trivial matters.NAB should do its job and clear this case whichever way it goes.
The beginning of the end of PTI'
:):) @ Ahmed @ ali salamn alvi... and alike...
No need to mention any logical comment for you as this is something really challenging to deal with...
On a street level: I am amazed to see how you folks are obsessed with PTI...:). It is simply great and I am really enjoying it.
First of all,he is not a senior member of PTI.Secondly ,if he is involved in corruption then he has chosen the wrong party.PTI will never try to protect him.we are not like the party wallas who try to defend every illegal action of the party wallas. In fact we are not going to spare IK in this regard.ONe thing i will add here that ET reporting is a bit awkward here.Have they reported corruption cases in such a manner of "SOME OTHER PARTIES".Anyways justice should be done quickly.
Yep as a PTI supporter. If he is guilty he should be skewered... I think its a good thing NAB focuses on PTI entrants , it will make PTI job of weeding out bad apples easier.
Highly impressed by the PTI response above. Not one person defended the guy :P
GO PTI
Well said… How about implying the same rule on President Zardari??? He spent 11 years in Jail without a single conviction.
Zardari was CONVICTED by a swiss court and lost the appeal. Why do you think they wont send the letter...
Oh Mine.. You opened my eyes!!
Now i am going to vote for Zardari :D
If he is guilty and convicted, then I am all for it.
Imran Khan should make him an example for others in his party.
PTI has to be different from the other parties, thats only the way it can bring real change.
How come anyone supporting PTI on a blog is labelled as troll ??
@Adeel Ahmed: why at the time of awarding tickets, why not when they join the party...dont bring such scum into PTI.....thats simple
This is Pakistani politics for you. And here starts a another drawing room discussion and blame game.
@Asher: NAB is independent and you've gone nuts!
@A. Z. Khan: Your comment was the best. :)
Interestingly, the mot important part of this piece where it highlights NLC scam, in which the Generals are allegedly involved in corrupttion of billions of rupees needs our attention the most. PTI is mainly lead by a bunch of opportunists, apparently supported by the establishment. PTI is as good as our establishment.
@Ali Salman Alvi: @ahmed: I can't believe you two have such myopic political views and biases stance. Stop pinning us PTI Supporters down with derogatory words such as trolls.
I demand Malik Naveed Khan's termination from PTI. There's no place for crooks in the party.
Tribune why every one of your writer starts his/her article as if working for a second grade tabloid. This article could have just said 'a senior member of PTI' rather then 'a senior member of IK's party of self professed clean politicians'. Please you guys are journalists just report and not make such biased comments in a news report. Have a look at other well know newspapers of the world and you will see the difference.
Good explanations/excuses by PTI supporters :-
.. "He has not been given tickets".. .. "He is just another member".. .. "He is less corrupt than PPP and PML-N".. .. "He will not be given ticket if convicted"..lol.. as if he will get convicted....
If this is the criteria then what is PTI all about ?? Only ticket will decide membership ??
Then why are you creating political instability in the country and asking for early elections ??
What about Dife-e-Pakistan rally ??? Is this not a support to fringe elements ??
Now you may say that just attending the rally does not define the PTI party.... haha..
The reason behind IK is facing criticism bcoz he call every politician corrupt and all that.. Is this not hypocrisy ??
Things must be transparent, not selective.
@haroon.
Spoken like a true PPP, or PML_N , or PTI member. It does not matter who you are, You all sound the same.
I am still laughing at "Senior Leader". Express Tribune editor must look into it.
Look in the mirror and worry about who you see - the rest will take care of themselves.
NAB = the institution to blackmail politicians or "small fraud cases"
where are the cases of Gilani's son? Where are the cases of Khanani & Kalia..?
NAB is just another name of police...a white collar police actually who do not take bribes in thousands...they deal in millions :)
Imran Khan,you have two choices.
Admit, PTI made a mistake in taking him as a member .
Suspend or cancel his membership, till further notice.
And if you are unable or not willing to do anything , then welcome to the real world of Pakistani politics. You and PTI, will now be recognized as a political party in good standing within the context of how things are done in Pakistan.
Let the horse trading begin.
No one is above the law, NO one, NOT even Imran Khan
Member PTI Norway.
@Enlightened: Well said... How about implying the same rule on President Zardari??? He spent 11 years in Jail without a single conviction.
PTI has more than 1 million sms members. Do you seriously think it is even possible to check the credentials of each and every individual? As long as someone is not holding any party position or getting any party ticket he is responsible for his own acts, PTI cannot take the blame for millions, it is not even practically possible.
Come on the anti-PTI Trolls. Jump jump celebrate!!! Woohooo!
Well what about the "dormant" NAB cases against PPP and PML N people? They are in plenty, but I am surprised that NAB sprung into action as soon the man joined PTI.
Journalistic standards have surely gone down the drain the headline reads "Senior PTI Leader" seniority is determined by either number of years in the party or the position assigned by the party Mr Malik Naveed Khan has neither so how can he be classified as senior only Zahid Gishkori knows!!!!
As for charges against him we welcome an investigation and if proven guilty PTI will push for criminal proceedings against him we arent in the business of giving excuses like "conspiracy against democracy"
Well in the court of law you are innocent till proven guilty and PTI should adopt this policy for its membership. However, since the party took up the crusade against 'Corruption' it should never give tickets to individuals with such background....
I think that it is good for PTI bcoz if he is found guilty or fraud then he should be removed fro PTI bcoz self accountability is a very good thing and i think this is an old story and Omer cheema of GEO reported it in NEWS . . .
Good job NAB!!
Let the law take its course. Masood Sharif Khattak spent several years in jail courtesy NAB and eventually was acquitted.
I'm neither a PTI supporter, nor do I much care for trolls on either side. But, what's interesting in the first two comments is the anti PTI trolls trolling about how the PTI trolls will troll.
He who trolls last trolls the hardest! Troll on my brothers.
@Ali Salman Alvi: I do not believe this has anything to do with political victimization, NAB has been working "independentaly" under this governement. Bavo Zaradari, for making NAB a "corruption free".
@Ali Salman Alvi: @ahmed: Calm down boys . . . all PTI members with influence in party affairs should stand up to the scrutiny of the law. I am glad this is happening - we don't need any impostors in this party with sincere intentions. PTI will not become a refuge for crooked fugitives from other parties - this is part of the process and I am glad that readers and public are being vigilant. Imran himself has said that accountability will begin at home.
Further, he joined on 23 December, so how is he senior leader???
Those who joined PTI will be scrutinized when ticket will be awarded. So I am not surprised if somebody involved in corruption joined PTI. Its open party and he is not even office bearer of PTI. Yes if PTI has awarded him ticket then he found corrupt then its bad for PTI. PTI will not interfere in any investigation of NAB.
No Comments! We can just cry and weep on our fates! Every 0ne is fraud! Who do we trust?
That's only 0.4% of total amount - give the guy a break =p
Dear PTI followers, what are you waiting for??? Bombard ET comments section with the rhetoric of political victimization and ascribe the probe as a hideous conspiracy against PTI.
Now PTI trolls will come and defend him by saying :-
Investigation is not complete ; Who do you want to vote then ? ; We "believe" in IK ; "He is better than others"
.....
