KARACHI: The authorities claim that three men associated with different religious organisations were gunned down in separate incidents on Friday. They said that two of them were from the Ahle Sunnat wal Jammat (ASWJ), formerly known as the banned Sipah-e-Sahaba, while the other man was from the Sunni Tehreek.

Twenty-three-year-old Qari Jalal Ahmed and 36-year-old Irfan were shot dead in Shadman Town by two men on a motorcycle, said the Taimuria police. They were taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. According to SHO Kamal Naseem, Ahmed was on his way to drop Irfan off at home in Kausar Niazi Colony, North Nazimabad, before heading off to his own house in Scout Colony, Gulshan-e-Iqbal. Ahmed used to teach at a seminary.

According to ASWJ’s spokesperson Maulana Taj Hanfi, Ahmed and Irfan were affiliated with his party. He said that they were being chased from Surjani, after attending a party meeting. He condemned the incident and demanded the government to arrest the suspects.

Their funeral prayers were offered in Kauser Niazi Colony and the bodies were sent to their hometown, Rahim Yar Khan, for burial. The police registered FIR no. 62/11 against unidentified suspects on a complaint by one of Ahmed’s relatives, Khalid Mehmood.

A Sunni Tehreek (ST) worker identified as 25-year-old Sajid Ali Siddiqui was shot dead in Jet Lines, said the Brigade police. They claim that four men on two motorcycles started firing at Siddiqui near his house. He was with a friend identified as Noman when the incident took place.

The suspects opened fire at him after an argument and Noman managed to escape. Siddiqui was taken to Jinnah hospital. SHO Ghulam Rasool Siyal said that Siddiqui was a recent university graduate. According to ST spokesperson Fahim Sheikh, Siddiqui was associated with the Lines Area sector. The police have registered FIR no. 35/12 against Shehzad, Danish and Wasi on a complaint from Siddiqui’s father. They did not disclose the political affiliation the nominated suspects but said that they were from a political party.
