NEW YORK: Asafa Powell won the 50-metre (m) event at the US Open indoor athletics meeting and predicted that the powerful Jamaican sprint squad could sweep the 100-m podium at the London Olympics. The former 100m world-record holder crossed the finish line in 5.64 seconds after edging compatriot Nesta Carter, who was second in 5.67 seconds, and American Trell Kimmons, who finished third in 5.68 seconds. “Surely a Jamaican Olympic sweep can be done,” said Powell. “We have some amazing runners.” Meanwhile, Veronica Campbell-Brown won the women’s 50m in 6.08 seconds.
