Neither is this about the selective application of NRO and the President’s immunity, though it was equally amusing to see Chaudhry Aitzaz Ahsan demolish Justice (retd) Khalil Ramday’s argument on immunity.
All of this and much more, being routine and interminable we shall have time to write about. So, this week it is about the media and the do-gooders.
We now have, Allah be praised, one Maya Khan, whose secret desire in life is to take the camera to the parks in Karachi and catch dating “couples”. She has taken it upon herself to rid the society of this menace, boys and girls responding to their hormones in this repressed society being the number one problem of this country.
Reminds me of this 2009 episode at LUMS when one student, a woman again, decided to videotape “couples” on the LUMS premises. Under the caption PDA@LUMS, this is what I wrote:
“Far from the usual misconception that totalitarian mindsets are always bloody, they are often grounded in a deep desire to do something good. In fact, so deeply ingrained can be the desire to do good that it can convince someone that he/she alone knows what is good for others.
“And doing good, or getting others to do good and by implication preventing them from doing what is not good and therefore harming themselves and others must always be good...no? At the level of the primer, yes.
“Beyond the primary level, however, someone hell-bent on doing good is as much a social nuisance as a misanthropist. Indeed, while one doesn’t often see ‘bad’ people hawking their wares, the do-gooders strut around like cocks (yes, there was a time cocks were just called that!) and wear their do-goodness on their puffed up chests and colourful plumes.
“The history of ideas is interesting in this regard and one sees how a person moves from accepting an ideology of goodness to wanting to spread it around to realising that doing good demands that others, if necessary, be subjected to the ideology, too bad if the process involves some violence and the killing of a few million here and a few million there. The end, after all, is all – or, as Albert Camus said, even to achieve innocence we have to wade through bloodshed.
“If goodness is the end-result, and if it demands that a few be put to the sword, the benefit of recreating Eden far outweighs the cost of condemning some because those who are thus condemned are the ones standing between the utopia and its realisation anyway.
“The journey from conceptualising, doing, and spreading good, to a violent realisation of the perceived Eden is one of the most important lessons of the history of ideas and the strand that runs through it is the paradox.”
Of course it would be optimistic to think that Ms Khan is privy to the history of ideas or would even know such an animal exists. From the way she conducted the programme it is clear that she is even ignorant of the technical and professional requirements of the medium she is using to earn a hefty salary package. She typifies what TV has come to in this country; not only that but also how people with no ideas and brains the size of peanuts have actually come to define the genre and become powerful and, yes, dangerous.
Any decent editor/director would have fired her. But I am wrong. No decent editor/director would have hired her in the first place. The problem with engaging such small and vulgar minds is that one can’t rely on the strength of ideas because appreciating ideas requires sophistication that normally eludes such people. There’s an adage in Punjabi, chirriaan di maut tay ganvaraan da haasa. Ms Khan is not someone who could appreciate Faberge eggs because she won’t be able to eat them. She is boorish and uncouth, as was her smirking, self-righteous posse who felt happy at chasing boys and girls in the parks of Karachi.
Inquisitiveness and doubt are two basic ingredients of knowledge which requires connecting dots, finding affinities, to quote Wordsworth’s line, in objects where no brotherhood exists to common minds. There are many aspects to this debate at the individual and collective levels. I would be the first to acknowledge that it is difficult to draw lines and even determine hard cases. What should be allowed, where, how, when and to what extent? What is the dialectic between tradition and the change that comes in many ways and puts its own burdens on the known and the accepted.
I’d also acknowledge that there is no rule of thumb. There never can be in human affairs which is why righteous, linear approaches fail so badly. But when we insist on ethics and norms, we ignore, wittingly or unwittingly, the fact that ethics is a veritable minefield. One just has to read the trolley experiments to see the inability of linear thinking to grapple with choices.
My problem then is: how can we allow a woman as dumb as this television anchor to wield so much power through the camera? Are we, in the media, prepared to look at these issues beyond TRPs? Perhaps not. We now take the camera even to people lying in coma, Arfa Karim, God bless her, being a case in point, with channels vying to get breaking news on her. From the terrible scarcity of information we now have a nauseating excess of it.

Well Said
Well there you go... she's fired along with the whole production team. It's a pity though that her "royal" friends who were also in the park get away with just some air time.
@Tarek Siddick: I wish that Allah SWT in his munificence and benevolence had created a separate continent where Messrs. Siddick and company could all live with lowered gazes, drinking milk and eating dates till kingdom come.
When the general youth of this country will not be provided with recreational facilities like Basketball court, parks, libraries stacked with latest books, R and D facilities, places to demonstrate your talent. It is very likely they will be involved in stuff like that of which we speak above.
And if I may, this one Maya Khan is getting popular because people of this country, well most of us like the stuff which Maya is giving to us, all we want as a nation is to poke our noses into other people business, we sort of get psychological satisfaction after watching programs like those of Maya Khan. SHE IS GETTING POPULAR BECAUSE PEOPLE ARE WATCHING HER SHOW, and paying attention to her.
Now something for M.K, why doesn't she go around searching for Talent on the streets, rather than trying to bust people on date, wouldn't it be much better if we were able to find, the next Dr Qadeer, or Jehangir Khan???, but then again none of us would watch that crap, right?
We are addicts to shows like that of M.K, and M.K herself is a pusher supplying us with the goods.
Dang it, I wish she had caught me in the act, I always wanted to use my pepper spray.
Just one liner to say 'after reading this article and debate on e-groups, I am still optimistic that Pakistan is dominated by progressive and secular minds and majority and that majority should speak. Silence will allow few conservatives and extremists (supported by our establishment) to rule us unconstitutionally, immorally and forcibly. Let us all sea pk and fight.
Thank you for such brilliant insight. This should be circulated, so that unprofessional, irresponsible individuals are taken off air. Maya and her team should be fired. please suggest how we can reinforce this.
Excellent piece of writing. We need people like you.
@Liberalache: 'considering the moral values of this country'??..what morals, what ethics are you talking about, in a country where people don't pay their taxes, their utility bills, give nothing to the exchequer but just take, take, take..those in power that is..the only sin in our country seems to be if one is seen sitting next to a member of the opposite sex in a public place, for what 'else' would they be doing????..for God's sakes, get your small minds out of the gutter!..
@Osama Siddique: If I was to start a petition slamming "liberals" of Pakistan as fascists who're trying to impose their values on others....I'll bet I could collect more signatures than you in a shorter amount of time. You live in Pakistan buddy...everybody here knows that the fools who sign these petitions don't represent a thing and its the masses that count.....notice that almost all the english language channels are dead and urdu/local language rules the day? The band of english speaking liberals is nothing but a group of living room activists and struggling people who have nothing better to do than to spend their days whining about this or that in yet another column spiced and peppered with some element of wit and humor...after all...that angraizi medium has to count for something right? Too bad its not in the realm of politics or anything meaningful...stick to your crowd and don't try to mess with the rest of Pakistan..you'll be sorely disappointed or worse.
The author asks "how can we allow a woman as dumb as this television anchor to wield so much power through the camera?"
Because mass society craves mindless televesion, the television channels are giving the people what they want (although the media industry itself has become out of contol and responsible for coming up with this rubbish to grab audiences and ratings by shocking people).
Society has a choice, if it doesnt want to see this vile programming it should boycott the channels.
All that was appropriate has been said about this article. But I just want to congratulate Mr. Haider for writing in such superb fashion. These days it is extremely rare to be able to enjoy such splendid writing especially in Tribune. Apart from all the sense that this article filled itself with, the share magnificence of writing style is awe inspiring. This article served as a reminiscence of the golden days of Dawn when the likes of this article were a regular occurrence.
Great response. The caustic tone was appropriate given Maya Khan's self-righteous behaviour.
On the other hand, I found your response to the LUMS student unnecessarily convoluted. The message makes sense, but it's a little hard to follow for most readers.
What I felt after seeing that clip is captured completely by your write up! They should issue a public apology for airing something as arrogant and hypocritical as that! Who makes the host or her crew or her bosses the judge of what anyone does in their free time! This was harassment being supported and aired by channel and action should be taken against it!
One of the worst program i ever witnesses, Maya Khan did a foolish job with her team. Media will take time to get mature, Democratic Media does not means that you can peer anywhere from the eyes of Camera.Repression will end at Blast.. Keep in Mind
Good article Ejaz. FYI there is currently a petition signed by almost 5000 people that is asking her and Samaa to clearly apologize and promise no repeat of this. We are talking so let's see. Or else we will continue agitating, campaigning, and writing to PEMRA and sponsors of Samaa. They are relenting but are still short of an unqualified expression of regret and apology for the highly irresponsible and dangerous moral policing and vigilantism on their part. As to Memo Gate many people have written fairly persuasively on how the case was a non-starter even on purely legal grounds, let alone its undesirability due to the kind of politics that motivated it, has permeated it, and continues to mobilize it. The people ending up looking the worst are unfortunately the judges due to their unholy alacrity in pushing this case forward and the less than even-handedness that has characterized their treatment of the various concerned parties. In one of the earliest articles on this issue you had, if I may say, glossed over the legal vires of this case, taken it as a given and focused largely on the political aspects. I hope that you now agree that there was never any legal substance to this - the test was never met, the possibility of 'burnt fingers' was always there, the witness and initial evidence were simply not credible, the DG ISI by the same token required additional scrutiny, too much depended on conjecture, many political and policy dimensions lay outside proper ambit of judicial powers, a flood gates apprehension very much existed, fundamental rights cannot be conflated to an extent that they lose all meaning and implementability and neither can they be paradoxically mixed up with a convoluted notion of national security (a concept that has historically been used to impinge fundamental rights).
Good analysis but one thing to be considered, Taliban was used to do the same thing in Afghanistan Parks & USA attacked on them but same thing is done by Maya but no condemnation from white house so far -:)
@American Desi: No industry has ever regulated itself. Asking the media to regulate itself is like asking polluting industries to run the EPA.
Salaam .In sticking with subject proper, morality, as Muslims (believers of the Intellectual Book of Nature- That which is Read for men of understanding...The Book of Mercy), on the q. of sex, we now know that even in "checkingout" the opp. sex, scientifically proven, the body excretes an undisireable odour.Hence In the Quran-Allah'(S.W.T.) Words, Let the Believing men and women lower their gaze..... When adultry is done, a man, especially one married, is prone to a cardiac arrest........while injesting alcohol, and we all know Syedna Mohammed(S.A.W.)said, it has advantages, and disadvantages, but the disadvantages outweigh the advantages, so abstain. it is disallowed- Latest findings...".Alchohol damages brain cells."...... For those thinking , it is the' civilized' thing to do- what's civilized in ending up in an Alzhimer's state of mind? The purpose in citing all the examples above is roundedup in my Poem: Woe to the man who sit's in a Garden but cannot see...... Become a part of Nature , read the Book of Nature Al Quran Al Kareem..(no quickfix sol. meaning all evil, a promise that remainds unfulIndeed. If taken as rules/laws and regulations to be followed, it is a load of burden, but as a intellectual responcibility - it the burden is- "light" a Blessing for all. And so it goes for Islam , the middle path and the perfect balance , the Path to Light(Noor),resonating with nature..... As for the" holier than thou" aspect (The visible problem "scenario"here) ,We are not to be suspicious /prey on others, this is strictly disallowed. The big picture, Islam it's self, SubhanAllah, Allah (S.W.T.) be praised,He as He says in the Quran, There is no compulsion in Religion , as in one can only tell/express what they know re. The Religion....1God bless all the muslims, and much love to the families....... Tarek Siddick.
excellent Haider sb.....you made my day...
A heated debate in Social Media about Maya Khan Brigade, a few articles in print but electronic media is silent! WHY?
Great article, and I suggest it be translated into Urdu and printed in Jang or Nawa-I-Waqt so that it is read by much more of the population..there is too much of a divide being created between English medium and Urdu medium in education..so perhaps the references to Faberge Eggs or Albert Camus could be substituted or 'translated' into more meaningful metaphors or explanations in Urdu..that is our national language and one that was the medium of the Maya Khan show..
I was surprised to see this particular on Youtube and happy to know that people in my country are ready & willing to condemn such absurdity. Such a scene was created by a GEO morning host and she has been banned from any future programs. I feel SAMA should fire her.
I think it is good that things are now coming out in open. Though I don't support Maya khan's show, but I think this will go long way in opening up the society. Now while some couple will stop going out due to fear, but other will react by defying this vigilantism and that will open up the conservative society. As they say if something doesn't kill you it makes you stronger.
Mirza: Does that site give you boing boing down there?
and what about all the crime shows that are being aired on TV showing just vulgarity. Yesterday I saw utube clip of Raid of dawn news and the anchor was showing us dating in a cold drink stand quite properly covered and calling it fah-hashi ka adda???????????
Now we have come to know how "free" and "independent" this media is.
Ijaz as always KUDOS
This woman is deprived of love and shows her own perversion. The sight of two young people in love is the most beautiful thing God has created. Nothing can compare to that. If youngsters are not allowed to talk and know each other even in open and public place then they would go and do things in secret. It is good thing that they are keeping it open and public. She is only jealous of these young and loving couples. In any other country taping without permission is a major crime. Even the law enforcement agencies cannot tape without prior permission from a judge. However, the judiciary in Pakistan is too busy in “manufactured” cases against the elected govt and has no time or desire to protect ordinary citizens from these preys.
Actually to great extent actions of maya and likes are inspired by religion - most likely incorrect interpretation of the texts.
One needs to correct the interpretation which is the source of this strength in the hands of maya hamids...
Ghamdis are the need of hour...
Excellent! Ejaz of old revived. You made my day.
@Babloo: Why are you dragging your Indian homeland into a discussion Pakistanis are having about some self styled moralist who is harassing people in public parks? I don't mind input from our Indian neighbours but why must you drag India into every discussion on Pakistan? Maya Khan showed herself to be a very ignorant and shameless person. She deserves to be punished by the likes of a media regulatory body and I fully support such a body that can keep our media people in line.
Appropriate thrashing! Such dumb people need and deserve and must be made to experience what humiliation is all about and especially in public. Let this be an educational experience for many others like her in the media.
Ejaz sahib, would appreciate if you could shed light on your interpretation of article 248.
hahaha Maya Khan, in her wildest dream wouldn't had realized that there will be such a strong reaction
@ishaq, Pakistani media needs self regulation and not Regulation. Authority mandated regulations can always be used to suppress a genuine issue.
Thank you for speaking up Ejaz. We have an extremely intolerant society and we seem to be going back to Zia days or even worse. I read about how Zia had a moral brigade in 80s which use to check nakahnama and namaz. 2012 gifted us Maya brigade!
Boycott SAMAA TV for supporting Maya Khan and her unethical behaviour
Below is the response of CEO SAMAA TV:
"I have travelled to Khi to look at this matter and yesterday Maya apologized in her program for this. I can assure this will never happen again. SAMAA is a progressive channel. There are certain other directives that have been put into place as of yesterday. I thank everyone concerned in bringi...ng this matter to my attention. It's really appreciated."
Maya never apologized rather she said that she was right!
Amazing piece of writing, Ejaz you tell her off!
I get a feeling of deja-vu reading this article because just yesterday I was reading a similar article by bina shah. And even the message is same -camera wielding journalists invading the privacy by thrusting micrphone into women's face.
Mr Ejaz , there are far more dumb, uncouth and incendiary television anchors in Pakistan than Mrs Khan, however those happen to be pro-establishment. I never hear you questioning those that espouse anti-America, anti-India, pro-Taleban vitriol on TV everyday.
Pakistani Media Needs some regulations Morning Shows Hosts need some Ideas Political Talk Show Hosts need some Research & Topics
Shah Ji, your final sentence says it all "From the terrible scarcity of information we now have a nauseating excess of it." Kudos.
We are just highlighting Maya Khan's attack on couples, but in so many episodes she with her Auntie brigade 'harassed' convicted criminals. Don't prisoners have the right to decline a morning-show media trial? And It's not just Maya, we see such scavenger run programs on each and every channel.
the last line reminds me of a remarkable Brave New World of Huxley
Excellent analysis. Pakistan desperately needs a powerful, autonomous body to regulate the media that is currently in an extremely powerful position. You are actually playing with the mind-set of the nation with such irresponsible media coverage.
Jokers like Maya Khan should never be on national television in the first place. The pursuit of the best ratings has sadly left our media houses without any sense of responsibility concerning professional and moral ethics.
The majority of us 'Cyber Awaam' does not understand how such a strong pillar of our country continues to function without ANY rules and regulations whatsoever.
And I'm sorry but the organisational/functional structure of PEMRA is an absolute disgrace, and thus it is only put to use by our filthy politicians (when in power) to malign the media.
Anything in excess is dangerous, and a media without any limits is bound to be cancerous!
Kudos Sir
Kudos
it's a tragedy that neither has she issued an apology( the self righteous response was not an apology but maya telling the world that what she did was right & stands by what she did and that she was the real victim in this saga) nor the channel management has apologised for airing that travesty of a show.that women are still calling in praising their maya baji shows the level to which our society has decayed.A section of our female population praises and glorifies self righteous naik parveens who humiliate and shame other women for their percieved crimes. The whole gang of women that harassed and chased down random people in a park should be condemned unconditionally. They behaved like a pack of wolves going after new prey.
