The feature-length film, titled The Third Jihad, shows militants shooting Christians in the head, car bombs explode, executed children lie covered by sheets and a doctored photograph of an Islamic flag flying over the White House.
In January 2011, when news broke that the department had used the film in training, a top police official denied it, then said it had been mistakenly screened “a couple of times” for a few officers.
A year later, police documents obtained under the state’s Freedom of Information Law reveal a different reality: the film was shown, according to internal police reports, “on a continuous loop” for between three months and one year of training. During that time, at least 1,489 police officers, from lieutenants to detectives to patrol officers, saw the film.
News that police trainers showed this film so extensively comes as the department wrestles with its relationship with the city’s large Muslim community. Members of the City Council, civil rights advocates and Muslim leaders say the department, in its zeal, has trampled on civil rights, blurred lines between foreign and domestic spying and sown fear among Muslims.
“The department’s response was to deny it and to fight our request for information,” said Faiza Patel, a director at the Brennan Center for Justice at New York University Law School, which obtained the release of the documents through a Freedom of Information request. “The police have shown an explosive documentary to its officers and simply stonewalled us.”
Tom Robbins, a former columnist with The Village Voice, first revealed that the police had screened the film. The Brennan Center then filed its request.
The 72-minute film was financed by the Clarion Fund, a non-profit group whose board includes a former Central Intelligence Agency official and a deputy defence secretary for former US president Ronald Reagan. Its previous documentary attacking Muslims’ “war on the West” attracted support from the casino magnate Sheldon Adelson, who has helped reshape the Republican presidential primary by pouring millions of dollars to support Newt Gingrich.

A small percentage of terrosts are responsible for the current Islamophobia in the world. Most people know that majority of muslims are peace loving and goes through their daily lives like everybody else. But if you have a barrel of beautiful juicy apples and you are told just a few of them are poisonous, will you dare to eat any apple from that barrel? It is a similar situation with westerners. They know majority are good people, but how will they recognize a terrorist from a good person? Better take precautions and not be sorry later. It is the responsiblity of the peace loving majority to weed out the poisonous minority from within their communities and restore the name of Islam as a peaceful religion. Blaming the west on Islamophobia will not solve the issue.
Evolution of American Dream into American NightMare.....
Who can blame them? The attacks on 9/11 probably killed quite a few NYPD officers, and it isn't too far-fetched considering the current crusade Islam is on where it's trying to enforce Sharia and its way of life all over the world. The suspicions cast on Muslims in the west is nothing compared to those cast on the west/Christians/Jews by Islam. And frankly speaking until they allow churches and synagogues in Saudi Arabia, Muslims should quit crying about not being allowed to practise their religion in other countries without suspicions.
@antanu g: @Pakistani kashmiri: Why are we going through a charade of pseudo outrage at the film, when there are so many of our fellow muslims at home who regularly go about killing, bombing and torturing other muslims -- there is an alphabet soup of organizations dedicated to just such purpose right here in the land of the pure. Why can't we plumb our hearts to spare a bit of outrage at actual killings of our own men, women and children? Even worse is our treatment of minorities whom we constitutionally and legally oppress -- even liberals among us wink at the forced conversions of minorities. Let's start by putting our own house in order.
@Sam: Whatever pleases you. The irrational mind sets of the people in the name of religion as can be seen in street protests in PAK is well depicted in the fictional account of the film. If you already know the mind set, you do not have to watch it.
The film can be viewed as anti-Muslim or anti-terrorist film. It is in the eye of the beholder. Nothing in the film is out of context of what is happening around the world today.
islamophobia on the rise, i wish if some one genuinely makes an effort to understand and preach islam and let the world know how it has been wrongly used for personal interests by groups, individuals and even states. Cops need to know how bad guys look like and what do they do which need to be stopped, they dont need to tag bad guys to a religion. its a pathetic and sad mind set of some one to provide training focused on terrorising a small part of society for the religion they follow.
@John B: the film is the equivalent of me creating a film using selected footage featuring Newt, Santourum, Robert Spencer, Pam Geller and other necons and islamaphobes in the US and saying that is official US policy to a uninformed public. Good propaganda but not helpful to anyone.
Just to add to the story, the narrator of the film is Zuhdi Jasser, who as part of the American Islamic Leadership coalition wrote a letter of support for former Ambassador. Hussain Haqqani. the film also featured Manda Zand Ervin (another signatory).
Jim Woolsey the former CIA Director and Chair of the Defence of Democracies Foundation (right wing islamaphobic think tank) is also in the film. Mr Woolsey is the former business partner of Mansoor Ijaz. The Defence of Democracies Foundation, well they hosted a dinner in 2010 at the residence of one Hassan Haqqani.
The film was based on the news footage and slogans that you can find in you tube and other documentary. People in the US has not seen what is happening in the streets of London and in PAK.
You have missed the important bit in the NYT story. The narrator of the film is Zuhdi Jasser, who as part of the American Islamic Leadership coalition wrote a letter of support for former Ambas. Hussain Haqqani. Some of the other signatories are also interesting (google search will show common trait)

Why would an Islamophobic, zionist organisation like Clarion be concerned about the Ambassador, well with this anti Iran fundraiser held in the Ambassadors residence it seems he must have had a use: http://www.lobelog.com/fdd-opens-iran-confab-dinner-at-orens/
Now go and do some investigations - there is more to memogate than meets the eye.
well....if US stops interfering in islamic world affairs, things will automatically change.
well....where are those who pooh pooh the conspiracy theories?
well part of the fear has a reason,we all know that.Get rid of the reason, that is battle half won
