RAWALPINDI:

Dr Mussadiq Khan was reappointed as the principal of Rawalpindi Medical College (RMC) on Thursday, after being cleared of charges of abusing his powers two years ago.

RMC officials confirmed that authorities removed former principal and urologist Dr Afzal Farooqi before Khan was appointed, following a disciplinary inquiry against Khan and other Holy Family Hospital and RMC officials.

The allegations levelled against Khan included the issuance of a fraudulent house job certificate to his son and not initiating legal action against apparently regularised doctors who had never been hired on contract by the provincial health department.

He was also accused of selecting a female doctor as a medical officer despite her name not being on the list of candidates, assigning major duties to junior doctors, awarding a contract for substandard syringes, transferring funds from the Bank of Punjab to JS Bank without prior approval of the provincial government and proceeding abroad without prior permission.

Dr Khan said that the higher authorities had found no evidence against him. “My reappointment shows that all allegations were false and baseless,” he said.

The Young Doctors Association welcomed the reappointment of Dr Mussadiq Khan as the new RMC head, stating that students would benefit from his vast experience and expertise that he brings to the post.
