ISLAMABAD:

The Supreme Court on Saturday announced that it would take up PPP leader Babar Awan’s alleged derogatory press conference on the memo case on January 4.

The order passed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry stated that after an examination of the Awan press conference and reactions from the attorney general and prime minister, the court felt that it was appropriate to take up the matter.

Following the apex court’s decision to form a one-member commission headed by former FIA DG Tariq Khosa to probe the Memogate case, Awan addressed a press conference rejecting the decision and questioning its motives.

On December 30, while delivering a verdict on the maintainability of memo case petitions, the chief justice termed the press conference contemptuous and called for its transcript in his chamber.

The Supreme Court in its order said, “…the order of the court was criticised contemptuously,” adding that Justice Asif Saeed Khan Khosa, was referred in terms which prima facie were “contemptuous”.
