KARACHI: Former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif will begin his coaching stint with the Afghanistan team today with an aim to improve standards of the talented side.

The former wicket-keeper, who scored 1381 runs in 37 Tests and 1709 runs in 166 One-Day Internationals (ODI), reached Kabul to join the team camp that starts today in Jalalabad as Afghanistan’s batting consultant.

“There is a lot of talent in Afghanistan and after getting some specialised coaching, the team can really do well,” Latif told a press conference following his arrival at the Afghan capital.

Latif, who led Pakistan in six Tests and 25 ODIs, said Afghanistan have the capability of moving up at the international stage.

“The players are very keen to do well for their country, they have lot of pride and energy and that is a great sign,” said Latif.

To a query regarding security, Latif said it was none of his concern and he was just focusing on his assignment.

“Security is not my concern. I am being looked after and my job is to focus on the coaching assignment,” said the former wicket-keeper.

After a six-day stay in Jalalabad, Latif will return to Pakistan before accompanying the Afghanistan team on a tour to Scotland.
