Objections: Lecturer challenges law college principal’s extension

HYDERABAD:

A lecturer challenged recurrent extensions given to a law college principal, who retired in 1998, in the Sindh High Court.

The lecturer advocate Bilawal Ali Ghunio has petitioned the court, stating that the extension availed by the Principal Aftab Ahmed Shaikh of Jinnah Law College, Hyderabad, is in contravention of a Supreme Court of Pakistan ruling.

“He has been serving in the same capacity since 1979 and has been getting unceasing extensions of three years,” he stated in the petition.

According to the petitioner the last extension given to Shaikh expired on December 17, 2011. Shaikh is still serving as principal.

Shaikh also served as Hyderabad’s mayor from 1987-1992. He was elected to the national assembly in 1988 and became a senator in 1994. He retained his position as principal during his term as mayor and his tenure in parliament.

Ghunio pleaded that Shaikh be removed from the position and a senior professor of the college be appointed as the principal on the basis of seniority.
