DURBAN: Sri Lanka fast-bowler Chanaka Welegedera bowled his team into a commanding position on day two of the second Test against South Africa, as the hosts were bundled out for just 168 in the first-innings in reply to the tourists’ 338.

At close, Sri Lanka lost captain Tillakaratne Dilshan for four to end the day at seven for one, an overall lead of 177.

Welegedera finished with career-best figures of five for 52, while spinner Rangana Herath picked up a four-wicket haul as South Africa’s batting line-up suffered a melt-down to lose their last seven wickets for 67 runs. Hashim Amla was the top-scorer with 54, with AB de Villiers supporting him with 25.

Earlier, the tourists resumed on 289 for seven with Thilan Samaraweera becoming only the second Sri Lankan to score a century in South Africa. He was the last man out for 102 as debutant Marchant de Lange finished with seven for 81. De Lange’s figures were the best recorded by any bowler in Tests in 2011.
