An official statement citing a government spokesperson said that the democratic government will not be cutting back on the programme's budget since it believed it was in the best interests of the county.
The spokesperson added that the government is striving hard to expand and further strengthen the defence system of the country.
Earlier in the day expert-level secretaries from India and Pakistan discussed conventional and nuclear confidence building measures (CBMs) as part of a peace process in Islamabad.
Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) leader Shah Mehmood Qureshi, addressing the PTI rally on Sunday, had said that a nuclear deal between the US and India severely undermined Pakistan.
Qureshi added that if Pakistan ever signs a ‘no first strike’ agreement with India, its nuclear assets will be wasted and worthless.
In November, The Atlantic, claimed that Pakistan is “an obvious place” for militants to seek nuclear weapons or materials because of a weak government and infiltration of its security forces by militant sympathisers.

@Patriot I agree 100% with you. DO WE NEED NUKES? Let us use this technology to further our own energy deficit. ALSO is Kashmir issue really worth the security of Pakistan? Isn't it time we called off this blind support for an entity that is undermining our security and driving us to bankruptcy? Yes they are our brothers but they have done tremendous damage to the security of another Nation in this neighbourhood. If we want to live in peace we must take the first step. Come on lets get real. and before you go off on one, DO NOT CALL ME A TRAITOR because I have done my bit for this great country. There are lots of great people here so let us stand behind them and give them our support for a change rather than crying blood all the time.
@Menon: Your sermon is applicable to all nuclear powers....why single out to Pakistan only?
@Mirza Pakistan can still match much larger and richer countries bomb for bomb.
Ahem! Do you know how many nuclear weapons US has?? Each Megaton thermonuclear warhead is probably equal to all the nuclear weapons of India and Pakistan combined in terms of explosive force. It is a silly dream that India or Pakistan can match the US in terms of ability to destroy.
@Mirza:
An just how having a nuclear weapon is going to prevent the US from conducting another operation similar to the against OBL? What are you going to do, explode an nuclear weapon inside of PAK or do you intend to tie one on to a camel and attack the US.
Your comments are silly. They do go along way in estabilshing why PAK is the way it is today.
Sorry,this is essential part of Memogate..........budget has to be cut.......
I dont know what to comment or question the wisdom of GOP and military to possess 100, 200 or 500 nuclear toys which would make them feel safer or act as a deterent or fight against India or USA as my wiser friend Mirza has commented along with the priorities of the nation vis-a-vis its economic conditions.
Let us keep cutting the education, healthcare, power generation, flood relief and other civilian projects. We need hundreds more of the nuclear weapons to fight the US and protect our strategic assets. We don't want the US to come and kill another OBL ever again in a Pakistani base. Pakistan is a rich country with huge army and all expensive toys; we do not need any foreign aid. As a third world country with small economy Pakistan can still match much larger and richer countries bomb for bomb.
Look, i think we have enough nukes to prevent any invasion for eternity. I'm not saying that stop research in nuclear energy, but i am saying that let's use nuclear energy for power generation and develop our economy.
