India warns over US arms supplies to Pakistan

India described the scale of US military assistance to Pakistan as "disproportionate" to Islamabad's needs.

India described on Monday the scale of US military assistance to Pakistan as "disproportionate" to Islamabad's needs and warned that it could be used to target India.

Defence Minister AK Antony said he had raised New Delhi's concerns during talks last week with visiting US National Security Advisor James Jones and Chairman of Joint Chief of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen. The military equipment being supplied to Pakistan is "disproportionate to the war on terror" for which it was intended, Antony told reporters.

"We feel that there is every possibility of diverting this sophisticated equipment against India," he was quoted as saying by the Press Trust of India.

India has previously protested the proposed delivery of unmanned US drones to Pakistan. Washington sees Pakistan as integral to winning the war in Afghanistan, as Taliban and al Qaeda-linked insurgents targeting coalition forces roam the mountainous region dividing the two countries.

maitreeslettres | 14 years ago | Reply India uncalled for concern has in fact its own multi-faceted hypocracy as the famous proverb describes 'baghal mein churri aur monh mein ram ram'. Does India's arm purchase specify how many Hawks and other sophisticated british arms will be used for such and such exercises. Does India tell US how many bullets, grenades she will shot at innocent kashmiris ? De facto, India caresses the void hegemonic and expansionist dream and aims to meddle with its uncalled for propaganda against it's neighbours. That's a true hindoue mentality.

Asif Khan | 14 years ago | Reply It seems that Mr. AK Antony thinks that Pakistan Army and nation is fool and have no idea what needs to be done for what purposes. He and his country is senseable and understand everything. I think these are the elements shows character and thinking of any country for other country. When the same happens for his ouwn country than its fine and have logical reasons but for other than it is not right and have negative reasons.
