KARACHI:

The lower staff working at the Sindh Ombudsman’s office have gone to court because they want to also be eligible for judicial allowances.

One employee, Furqan Ahmed Siddiqui, filed the constitutional petition arguing that they were being discriminated against.

His lawyer said that the nature of their work is identical to that of the subordinate judiciary, which is why they should also be entitled to these payments.

The provincial ombudsman, for example, receives Rs91,000 per month in an allowance. But the subordinate staff is denied these perks by the finance secretary, who he names in the petition.

The chief minister was sent a summary as well, but it’s been on his desk and no decision has been taken.

For his part, the additional advocate general, Adnan Karim Memon, opposed the request, saying that such allowances were not admissible for the staff of attached departments.

He also objected to them naming the chief minister.

The bench allowed for his name to be deleted.

Justice Maqbool Baqar and Justice Imam Bux Baloch directed the Sindh government to decide the issue in a month’s time and disposed of the petition.
