Interior Minister Rehman Malik took strict notice of the increase in bank robberies in the city on Wednesday and chaired a meeting with representatives from leading banks over the issue at the State Guest House.
While the banks blame the poor law and order situation and below-par quality of guards as the main reason behind the crimes, private security companies say the banks are not serious about security at their branches.
Additional Chief Secretary Waseem Ahmed told The Express Tribune that they decided at the meeting to form a federal-level committee to be headed by National Police Bureau Director General Waseem Kausar to look into the issue and make recommendations within three weeks.
The State Bank of Pakistan, Pakistan Bankers Association, home department and private security companies would also be part of the committee. “The meeting was held in a cordial atmosphere and we expect to make headway within the three weeks,” Ahmed said.
