The Rawalpindi board has gotten itself into a bit of a pickle. And the only way out seems to be a rather unique proposition: Only partial Intermediate Part-I results will be announced by the board on December 24, an official said on Wednesday.
The official said that a meeting of Rawalpindi Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education’s (RBISE) Board of Governors decided not to announce the results for the objective sections of the papers,
which are 20% of the total marks.
The official, who attended the meeting, told The Express Tribune that the members decided on announcing partial results because otherwise the pass rate would have spiralled down.
“The pass rate among 49,948 candidates was 47% in the results announced on October 17, but the number has gone down to 32% after rechecking,” the official said, adding that if the results of the objective parts are also included, the pass percentage goes down to 27%.
The official added the board members decided that candidates will get the same marks in their Intermediate Part-I objective papers that they get in their Intermediate Part-II exams.
College teachers expressed surprise over the decision, saying that first the authorities had delayed the results (the exams were conducted in April), and now they are taking an unprecedented step by announcing a partial result.
They said the government might not be able to cool down students who had been waiting for their results.
Acting BISE Chairman Dr Muhammad Ashraf said members of the board had taken the decision to provide equal opportunity to all candidates as they would be able to improve their results in objective papers in the second year examination.
Dr Ashraf added that the results would be put on the RBISE website on December 24. To satisfy the candidates, the examination body will allow candidates to see their objective papers. If they are satisfied, their final results would be announced.
On December 15, a group of college students angry about the delay in the announcement of results after rechecking attacked the RBISE administration office and burnt it down.
