In the last 22 months, around 93 families from the Bheel community ie Dalits or untouchables, approached the Bait-us-Salam Madrassa in Matli to convert. Most of these people work as farmers and are from Badin, Tando Muhammad Khan, Mirpurkhas or Sanghar. “We were neither Muslim nor Hindu,” said a newly converted Abdullah Shaikh. “We had no knowledge of our religion. I haven’t even seen our sacred book and don’t even know what it’s called.” He added that Muslims and Hindus both usually stay away from them and their attitude was humiliating.
“I am happy to convert,” he said. “No one forced me to do this. My children will offer their prayers proudly and will not be discriminated against.” He told The Express Tribune that he was a farmer and had eight children. “We live comfortably,” he said. “My maternal cousin converted to Islam a few months ago and it really inspired me to do the same.”
Another new convert Khan Muhammad, 45, said that no one in his family had converted to Islam. It is commonly believed that these people convert as they are unable to pay the debts they owe to their landlords. As the debts keep mounting, the landlords exploit them and force them to work on their lands as bonded labour. He admitted that he owed Rs60,000 in debt and the seminary had paid it off. While talking to The Express Tribune about religion and tradition, he said that his brother and sister-in-law had asked a Muslim cleric to perform their Nikkah some 40 years ago because they did not know what religious norms they were supposed to follow.
Maulana Muhammad Mushtaque Magsi from the Bait-us-Salam Madrassa confirmed that 93 families had indeed converted to Islam in the last 22 months. “Some students and converts managed to convince others to follow suit,” he said. “A few people also come here because they are in debt or fed up with life. We do not force anyone to convert.”
While talking to The Express Tribune about how they helped the converts settle into their new lives, Maulana Magsi said that in order to help with the transition, the converts were asked to live in a colony belonging to the seminary for four to five months. He added that they were given food, medicine, Islamic education and some money when they left the seminary.
“We do face some problems because of the landlords,” he said. “They don’t want the farmers to convert and believe that we are from some banned outfit or receive financial support from abroad.” Magsi added that they did not have a hidden agenda and were only trying to help.
Bait-us-Salam patron Haji Bashir Kambho said that they had paid Rs311,000 for the seven families on Saturday.
He added that the landlords had refused to let them go without the money. “I think some of the families converted to Islam because of their debts but do not think all of them had the same intentions,” he said. “The discrimination they faced has something to do with it too. They were not given respect among Hindus or Muslims.”

so we see that ultimately all religions are like political parties! gather the most followers to win the contest! where is the ideology to prevent social ills at work here? purpose is defeated na??
OMG....he has said that he faced so many problem....why?? Because he was not muslim. Check history Islam has grown only by force not by love! That's the reason now its a weak!
@Ajay I agreed.
For any poor person on this planet the biggest religion is by the mean he can earn bread and butter for his family and self.So it does not matter which relgion he get coverted to, we all can comment because our basic need have been taken care and we have time to comment and have our veiw on such instances .Let's build more awarenESS and get right education ( being human) reaches and accessble to all on the planet .Let's build more human angle to every experience rather than showing our discomfort or bing right or worng ." KOI MAZAB NAHE SIKATA AAPAS MEIN BER RAKHNA "
@Hedgefunder: Indian Muslims are secular and objective. This is just for your information Dr. Rahi Masoom Raza wrote the screen play and dialogues of famous Hindu epic Mahabharat. In Pakistan a Muslim writing screen play involving Hindu deities should have faced a Fatwa. Azim Premji is an Indian Muslim and he is one of the richest persons in the world.
@Wondering!:
You would have to stop wondering and understand the concept of "Religion for mankind". Christianity and Islam both have followers in almost every culture and race in the world. Messages of Jesus (AS) and Muhammad (PUBH) is for all mankind. There are few exceptions but generally speaking Hinduism, Buddhism, Shinto, Sikh are mostly region based (NO disrespect intended towards any religion). I have been to places of worship of all major religions all over N America and have noticed that in a Church and Mosque you will see people of all ethnicities not as much in other places of worship. Hare Krishna temples are probably only exception, and I find western folks who follow Hare Krishna to be more humble and respecting towards other cultures and religions then other N Americans in general. I'll convey your message to them if you like, that if Krishna wanted them to follow him he would have come in the west not in India and they should go back to their original religion.
@Javed Latef:
'Converting to any religion is a personal decision. We should not make it an issue to discuss endlessly'
In the subcontinent, religion is not a personal issue. People have been massacred because of their religious affiliation. Here are some disturbing details
Partition of India - 1947 - 500,000 - 1.5 million died / 12.5 millions displaced Partition of Pakistan - 1971 - up to 3 millions died Religious/sectarian violence in India / Pakistan - 1 - 2 millions died Disintegration of Pakistan - ??? - tens of millions (conservative estimate)
I have not included here the loss to properties which could easily be tens of billions of dollars.
Religion is the single most preventable cause of dispute/death/destruction.
To all those who are celebrating this news, I want to say its a shame that you feel is way. This is the very reason these poor people had to convert, lie about not knowing their religion. The blasphemy law is effecting not just our minorities but also the mindset of many Muslims. Please open up and be better Muslims, real tolerant Muslims. I feel sorry for my people, we were never this petty.
@Hedgefunder:
citing one or two incidents...u say muslims in india are discriminated...good....now temme something....how many muslim states in the world (there are 52 if m nt wrong) give subsidy for haj trips??...how many of them have had some1 of some other religion as the head of state? (india had a muslim as president and even today the vice president is a muslim)...how many islamic nations give reservations to people of other faiths in govt jobs, education etc etc??...Javed Akhtar (a renowned indian...yes INDIAN lyricist) and his wife were nominated by the president to the parliament...and i can cite thousands of such incidents....
and btw...u talk of muslims being discriminated in india....may i know how are hindus treated in pakistan??...isnt it strange that even after such an increase in the world population...the hindu population in pakistan has decreased whereas muslim population in india has only increased??...now who gives u the right to talk abt muslims in india??...
just go and see the sikhs in NWFP...how they are looted for not being muslims....
man get out of ur perception...stop dividing the world...especially india
@amazing: What it means Islam was spread by the sword over the millenia. That all Islamic countries are backward and poor(except for oil producing countries which will go back to living in tents when the oil runs out) is enough proof that this so called religion has no place in modern world. Today's growth in Islam is through incessant breeding, not by new converts.
You know what? It is wonderful and congrats to them!
But the comment about why should non-Muslims in Pakistan remain in their religion is disgusting. I live in a predominately Christian country which is very Islamophobic, and if I ever heard someone say "why are Muslims not converting to Christianity, they should if they want to remain in this country" would be upsetting to me, I can't imagine what it would be like if you were a Sikh/Hindu/Christian/Parsi in Pakistan. A lot of these people are very patriotic and proud to be Pakistani and even serve in the army, we should embrace our minorities instead of disrespecting them.
One of my fathers best friends is a Pakistani Christian, and my mum had Hindu friends in Karachi and they are some of the best people they know. Judge people not by their religion, but by their character. Have you seen the U.S news lately? and the Republican debates? disgusting. If we don't like people judging us for our beliefs, don't do the same to others.
@amazing: The discussion was about Islam and its political agenda. How did the religion of Hinduism and Indian people come in?!!! In any case, your knowledge of Indian history is highly inaccurate and totally flawed.
The fact of the matter is that if god wants its followers to follow a specific message, say as prescribed by Islam, then it makes perfect sense to speak through a messenger who personifies and speaks the language and culture of the intended followers. Hence, there should be as many prophets as there are languages among people. How else will the desired followers get the message? The fact that a single messenger from one location would suffice for the entire multilingual, multicultural and multiracial world does not make sense.
In reality, the political agenda used under the guise of Islam is quite clear. The Arabs went around conquering and forcing people to their version of god's message. Then they stripped these converts off their native identities and cultures and required them to claim allegiance to one "Ummah". Religion is a personal and private spiritual relationship between a person and god. So, where does a political issue like one ummah or nation come in?
@Bashir
If a non muslim becomes a muslim you congratulate him but when a muslim converts to any other religion he is called a MURTAD and is liable to be killed. What is this ??
I suppose this is to prove that there is no coersion in religion.
@Hedgefunder: Misfire bro... I think that was for someone else.. I agree with you that it exists though..
If a non muslim becomes a muslim you congratulate him but when a muslim converts to any other religion he is called a MURTAD and is liable to be killed. What is this ??
Big deal. Many Hindus converted to Islam when first Muslim arrived in present day Pakistan.
One good thing that might come out of this conversion is that their sisters and daughters will be less vulnerable from rapists and abductors.
HedgeFunder: Both Shabana Azmi and Saif Ali Khan own properties in Mumbai. There can be instances of some society declining to sell a property in a particular housing complex, but then it happens to non-muslims as well.
In My area there is an exclusive housing development for Jains, and no one else can buy property there by society rules. There are similar other societies which bar selling to Non-Vegetarians. Is this discrimination? Yes, but in a private domain of contracts.
@Adarsh: true.fi that happens...it will be more reasons for america to finish pak off.instead...we cud have ALL the pak hindus MOVED to india and let pak die its death!
Why u guys making too much out of this it is there choice and Haritak Roshan wife is from Tanoli family what we say its her choice we cant do any thing.
@ha ha: Hinduism is full of divisions. But the key difference is they don't blow each other up
Muslims and Hindus both usually stay away from them and their attitude was humiliating.“We were neither Muslim nor Hindu,” said a newly converted Abdullah Shaikh. “We had no knowledge of our religion. I haven’t even seen our sacred book and don’t even know what it’s called.” “My maternal cousin converted to Islam a few months ago and it really inspired me to do the same.”
when indians came to karachi and became masters of this incredible city of karachi. why would these bheel community could not prosper on their own.
the article gives good points on their conversion. every person has right to seek God's rightful path.
why are we so ignorant! why we don't see the article with postive points. pakistan was converted from indian rule. most of pakistan kashmir becomes muslim. if our brothers and sisters knew after so long time to change their mind. why are so many people treat this article in harsh form.
@Wondering!: well...to tell you the truth...hindusim is also not a religion for native Indians.....India was invaded by Dravidian and they were the people who had all the famous people and prophetic personalities...so claim of indians that they are millions of year old civilization...is totally wrong...native indians were not good enough to be religiously or politically strong..it was Dravidian or mulsims who came and conquered them.... secondly ISLAM is religion for the whole world and for all times to come....it was foretold in hindu, christian, Jewish literature as well.....so it is wrong to say that prophet had to come in say sindh...!!!! and what's more, hinduism was and is still confined to India...Just tell me if hinduism has seen complete converts and nations like Islam has ... Islam started from Saudia and now 50 countries are Islamic...so what it means ? as per your debate Islam to be true needed 50 prophets in all these countries...??? you are wrong in that... and on the other hand hunduism is still in India only.......you should be worried that it is going nowhere but in India itself.... Lastly Do not ask needless questions based on naive thoughts...even children understand that success of religion can be gauged by how far spread it is and how various nations have accepted it....rather than boiling within same country........
Why should anyone be made to convert? Its wrong, Pak loses whatever little reputation that is left. This religious persecution, force, or otherwise, to convert is wrong.
@IndianAthiest: what about brahman, shooder, khatris and vesh...??? dalits....??? arya samaaj, brahmo samaj...??? you too have quite a few divisions......in hinduism
Bheels are tribals who have no concept of caste. Bheels are not dalits as claimed by this author. Please research before justifying religious conversion thro coercive methods
@Rehman: Converting to any religion is a personal decision. We should not make it an issue to discuss endlessly.
II wonder what exactly is 'conversion'?!! So thankful that the Hindu religion doesn't even have a process of conversion, to enable the fanatics in India to do forcible conversion. I am an atheist, but a Hindu. I subscribe to the Hindu principle of "Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam", or All humanity being one large family.
Most Hindus accept 'alternative path to truth'. So accepting another religion doesn't make one a non-hindu, for he is born Hindu, who is just following a different 'path', a different lifestyle.
That is what has enabled Hinduism to assimilate Jainism, Buddhism even Sikhism. Christianity & Islam too may be accepted as part of Hinduism in future. Afterall, Muslim Population percentage in India to gone up from 11% in 1947 to 14% now.
But, Wonder if India were to have 51% Muslims, they'd accept an 'alternative paths' prescribed by Hinduism, or will they start forcibly trying to change people's lifestyles?
This is really distressing. My main concern is that people who are converted are those who dont know their own religion. If they had knowledge about what is Hinduism , they may be Hindu today. Muslims target those who are illiterate , poor and full of debt. Muslims try to convert those who are socially discriminate by whatsoever reason. You can make advantage of others weakness and convert him into the religion of bloodshed and terrorism but can you try to make them realize that they are converted in spite of having full knowledge of their own religion.? Can you convert Hindu Scholar? No! Big no! because we Hindu knows that our religion need to to be sold on hand of morons. We Hindu dont like to sell our religion just for making maximum number of converts. We dont like others to feel that their religion is weak and rubbish so follow ours. We believe in making those unaware people to realize their own religious importance. We believe in over all human progress and growth, not concerned with his religion. Hinduism is the religion of total rationale and science . We dont go and sell for our personal interest or getting highest number of Hindus. We believe to make poor realize his self respect and reject whatsoever economical help for free and trust in God and pay it by himself. You are responsible to make your region just a thing to be sold for money.
These farmers did not convert to Islam because they wanted to become Muslims. For them, unfortunately, it was an economic necessity. It's not the seminary's fault, from their perspective they are helping indebted farmers out for the sake of propogating religion. It is the fault of the rulers of this country that for over 60 years of existence, Pakistan has been unable to have true land reform and abolsih feudalism in the country. What the seminary in the story did is the same thing that Christian missionaries do all over the world, including in India and Pakistan (buy converts). For some Muslims, maybe this is something to celebrate for some reason, but instead if we care about humanity, we should end this type of feudalism and bonded labor throughout the country and have true law and order. Then people with their free will can decide if they want to become Muslim due to Islam itself, and not because they are sick of being enslaved by landowners.
antanu
Good point. Hindus in India should stop worrying about what is happening in Muslim majority areas and start focusing on knowing Muslims who live among them.
I find it funny that people who want to convert others find religion to be a popularity contest. If someone converts for food or money, do they really feel the new religion in their hearts and minds? If there is only one true religion, why did God allow so many religions to exist and which would be more valid, the first or the most recent? Besides, we sll believe in the same higher power If I start a new religion tomorrow, will I have created a new God?
I can understand why a person would convert from a religion that treats them as a lower class but I believe one of the interviewed converts said that typically, other Muslims didn't treat them well either.
Atul www.thingsivenoticed.com
@antanu , Holier than thou attitude and always passing judgement from a self appointed high pedestal. I am born christian and I dont want any one getting converted to christianity ..What I would prefer is learn what good teachings jesus suggested and take good teachings from any other sources/religion and lead his or her life....
Please my Hindu and indian fellows, donot take this on your heads, 37 people changed thr religion on their own. freedom. the way you picture pakistan is bit exaggerated, i would recommend you to come and visit pakistan and see that pakistan is much more flexible than india. we treat brahmins and dalits alike, we dnt have any prejudice based on something people cant help about. The argumnets are baseless they can be thrown at you when you accuse muslims.
Wow- seems like majority of the people who gave positive feedback on this conversion are more excited about this incident than worrying about thousands of Muslims being killed in the name of the same religion. Why is it that so called "moderate" Muslims praise these conversions but don't have the spine to stand up to mullahs or radicals??
for a change, 37 people should convert to hinduism(albeit for a day) to see the reaction of our countrymen.
Congratulations on converting to religion of peace!
@Eternal: Sufis should 'convert' to Islam? They are all ready Muslims!
@Shyam: your comment is in bad taste...sour grapes?
@Dr. Who!: No you are not a muslim...and that too a practicing one. No sane muslim or for that matter no sane person, belonging to any religion, will ever oppose conversion to its faith.
One thing plzz...They were never forced to convert...& secondly They r indeed welcome to the light...Let them have the religious freedom as well as to those who aren't Muslims...Let us all live in peace...
If change of religion can solve all the problems , then there is something seriously wrong in the society . They can lie in front of camera , but they can't be liar to themselves .
Great. No one forced them to convert. They converted on their own choice. Poverty may be a driven cause as well but its not limited to them infact muslims at those parts of the world face the same situation as well..anyways they made their mind on their own choice. Happy for them.
Right, they are converting to avoid discrimination. Speaks for itself. They are left with no other choice if they want to continue to live.
Forced conversion!!!!
@Anon: Do you even know how these conversions occur? They are offered money by these so called missionary services and false pretext of being cured of illness by Jesus if they take up Christianity. And that too they target those section and areas of society which are vulnerable. Put bluntly it actually means - "Come join my religion and i will give you more material comforts and my god will take care of all your earthly problems which your could not do" - Don't you think that is a rather materialistic way of foxing people to join one's 'clan' while somewhere else the same religion's scriptures say "Pain is the way god tests you to see if you are worthy enough to get what he intends you to give!!"..
Would you accept it if some one from the west (lets say Americans) came to Pakistan and professed this way to come to Christianity? Not that i am against Christianity or Islam, but morality is often meant to be contradictory to materialism.. Is not it?
pakistan is running on top speed towards its destruction...can they give away their obsession to religion...
Which sect of Islam were they converted to?? Sunni, Wahabi, Brelvi, Shia, or Deobandi.
**I wonder how ET came to know they were hindu when they themselves are saying they didnt know which religion they belonged to...
Read - “We were neither Muslim nor Hindu,” said a newly converted Abdullah Shaikh. “We had no knowledge of our religion. I haven’t even seen our sacred book and don’t even know what it’s called.”
What kind of headline is this then?? Why fuel the hatred???**
there goes the vision of founding father of pureland
Adharsh was being sarcastic, all those taking his word must be hiigh on something. adharsh, as it is stated they did it on their own, it shudnot bother anyone. Dalits are oppressed caste of hinduism, they feel liberated from the stigma, shoudnot bother anyone.
To all Indians... If this is true: 2500 Hindus converted to Islam in 5 years in India...
http://www.hindujagruti.org/news/641.html
Is it then safe to say that these converts MUST be being tortured, raped, kidnapped and murdered before converting? And that these converts are only doing it because they want protection and shelter and money and to end the discrimination? If yes... what does it say about your supposedly liberal and secular country?
Thanks.
@Anon: "Dalits and untouchables in India too have been converting in large number to Islam and Christianity" my friend 90% dalit convert buddhism not a islam and christanity . islam converts is one of the lowest in india.because islamic culture in not fit in indian sociaty .mostly indian muslims are a different to pakistani and bangladeshi muslims . indian muslim are more liberal approch than another subcontinent muslims.jahan tak hindu ki baat hai hindu population in india 2011 gensus ke anusar approx. 93 carore se 95 carore hoga and u know world hindu population in 2011 is approx 1 billion hai.so don't care about hinduism . we are oldest living civilization and religion in the world.
and so this explains everything :
" Another new convert Khan Muhammad, 45, said that no one in his family had converted to Islam. It is commonly believed that these people convert as they are unable to pay the debts they owe to their landlords. As the debts keep mounting, the landlords exploit them and force them to work on their lands as bonded labour. He admitted that he owed Rs60,000 in debt and the seminary had paid it off "
Hope their problems come to an end.
@ksri: Bheels are original Community from the age of Ramayan. Those preachers guys just destroyed the original culture of Pakistan (what ever Left )
Now maybe their girls wont be kidnapped and raped
Wish them peace and happiness. Hope they find better lives with a new faith.
All of you forgot to say Mashallah. =)
@everyone Dalits and untouchables in India too have been converting in large number to Islam and Christianity. Instead of blaming us, maybe if there wasn't an inherent discriminatory system within their own religion they wouldnt feel the need to do so.
“I am happy to convert,” he said. “No one forced me to do this. My children will offer their prayers proudly and will not be discriminated against.” and will not be discriminated against, it says all ......
Masha Allah.. Great news.
Hope they find peace in whatever religion they choose to live with. What is sad about the narrative is the inhumane treatment of landlords.
As a fellow Muslim I am very happy for them. I dont go around forcing people to accept the truth but since these have. Heartiest congratulations!
There goes Jinnah's liberal Pakistan!
The minorities are becoming extinct species in the land of pure. It looks like Pakistan's past was another country.
I am sad not only because they are converted only due to economics but also what people are commenting here.
@Adarsh: if this land is unpure bcz of non-muslims then what about terrorists who are blowing your mosques? I think they are better in making your land pure :)
@Others Islam teaches tolerance which i cant see in society anymore. First follow and then preach.
Someone should have read them Nasim Kharal's classic story "Kafir." I am a practicing Muslim but refuse to "rejoice" this vulgarity. A sad day indeed!
@Adarsh: Land of pure? Your comment reminded of Hitler's Germany!
Congratulations to all!
All the hindus, christians, parsis, ahmadis and sufis should convert to islam as well. In fact all the shias should be converted to sunnis and our language should be arabic, not urdu.
congratulations to all
Great news!!! Make it land of pure as soon as possible. Convert all kafirs !!!!! Subhan Allah !!!
This is great news. Some of us have been arguing for years that it makes absolutely no social, logical, or religious sense for Hindus in Pakistan to remain Hindus.
I am aware that most Pakistanis do not understand matters of religion, but that is indeed the case.
This is doing of the feudal lord clans of the Bhuttos and Zardaris who in urban settings claim to be super liberals and worshiped by liberals, but in reality are the brutal ruling elite who oppress and discriminate on the basis of creed, clan, language, ethnicity and religion.
