According to a report by Express News, the hiring was revealed by a PIA official during a session of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Defence held on Friday.
When the committee inquired about rats, cockroaches and lizards being seen on airplanes, the official said that the planes were being regularly fumigated with anti-insect sprays, but an expert had also been hired for the task.
The PhD-holder is said to have done research on the presence of cockroaches on planes and various other areas.
In the past, several PIA flights have made emergency landings due to the discovery of rodents and other insects inside the aircraft.
According to an estimate, US$ 1.2 million are spent for thorough checking of one aircraft.

For us Pakistanis, this ISNT odd. This kinda act was EXPECTED.
Not just PIA but many an airline has a problem with pests and cockroaches. Have you folks every heard about the bed bug infestation in most major North American hotels and motels. If they are trying to curb this problem, you should welcome it instead of throwing scorn on on the management.
I have seen flies on PIA and only PIA flights. The seats and interior also need to vacuumed more regularly As for the service, they try their best under the circumstances though.
The cockroaches are OK, its PIA that needs to be exterminated.
PIA can only hire and not fire.
"In the past, several PIA flights have made emergency landings due to the discovery of 'rodents and other insects' inside the aircraft."
Rodents are rats, not insects. Hence it should be 'rodents and insects'.
Not a bad idea! :D infact more job opportunities :P
aha hahahahahahaha......! I just love Pakistan.
You all have tendency to criticize the government for no reason. C'mon can't you see that they have been wise this time by not forming a parlimentary committee to look into the matter...
Kindly hire someone for President post too.
how sad, I could not qualify to kill cockroaches
They want one to finish the roaches not one who studies cockroaches presence. Now get ready for more cockroaches!
How about just fumigating the aircraft ? And also identifying how they get on the plane in first place, probably the catering truck and trolleys. Ewww... no more food for me on PIA flights.
And this could be the reason for poposed Euro wide ban on PIA flights. They didn't want to embarrass our sensitivities by saying its unhygienic aircraft leaving to illegal "immigrants" landing in Europe.
rehman malik could also be qualified for the post
what happened to mortein/baygon etc and basic cleanliness? idiots!
On hearing this news the roaches will die with shame PAKISTAN ZINDABAD
This could only happen in Pakistan!!! To kill roaches hire a PhD!!!!.
What an excellent use of money and a Doctor.
