Journalist’s killing: Two men arrested for Wali Khan Babar’s murder

Suspects charged, but not for the specific murder.

HYDERABAD:
The Hyderabad police have arrested two more suspects in the killing of TV journalist Wali Khan Babar, according to police sources. Babar was gunned down in Karachi in January this year.

The men were identified as Fahim alias Baddo and Kamran alias Baba. They are residents of Liaquatabad in Karachi. But the Sakhi Pir police, who arrested them on Thursday night from the Timber Market area, have yet to charge them specifically in this case.

Instead, the men have been booked for attempted murder, obstructing duty and possession of illegal weapons over an enounter with the police, on the complaint of ASI Muhammad Ali Shah.

The police presented the two men in Civil Court No. 12 on Friday amid a heavy security detail. They were taken along with three other suspects, who were arrested for separate offences from Phuleli on Thursday night. The court handed them over to three days of judicial remand.

Sources say that Fahim and Kamran were arrested last week and were interrogated by officers of a joint investigation team a few days ago.

Wali Khan Babar was shot dead on January 13 in Liaquatabad No. 1 near the Apwa school as he was going home from office. The Special Investigation Unit (SIU) was tasked with the case. Its joint interrogation team (JIT) concluded that Babar was followed soon after he left his office at Shaheen Complex that day.

In April, five men arrested in another case by the Gulshan-e-Iqbal police had confessed to Babar’s murder during a routine interrogation. The detained men are Muhammad Shahrukh Khan, Faisal Muhammad, Muhammad Shakeel, Syed Tahir Naveed Shah and Syed Muhammad Ali Rizvi. They are awaiting trial. The absconding men wanted in the case include Faisal ‘Mota’, Asad, Nasir, Kamran and Saeed ‘Commando’.
