FAISALABAD:

A woman was shot and killed allegedly by her brother in Chak 72-RB on Thursday night.

Muhammad Latif, her father, told The Express Tribune that she had eloped with a neighbour and they had contracted marriage in a court three months ago without her family’s consent. She had returned home a few days ago on an assurance by her parents that they were reconciled to her marriage.

He said that while he and his wife had accepted the marriage his son, Muhammad Asif, kept insisting that his sister divorce the man. On Thursday night, he said, the argument again broke out between the siblings and Asif shot her. She died before the family could take her to a hospital, he said.

Latif said his daughter had been seeing the neighbour, Karamat, for over a year without the family’s knowledge. “He is a married man and has a family of his own.

He didn’t even divorce his first wife to marry my daughter,” he said.

He said Asif fled the scene after the killing. “We will prosecute him,” he said.

Karamat is also missing, his family told The Tribune.

Balochni police said an FIR had been registered on a complaint filed by the father of the deceased. SHO Dilbar Hussain said a team had been assigned the task of arresting the suspect.

Killed by paramour during escape In another incident in a Khanewal village, a woman was shot and killed allegedly by her paramour while the two were on the run.

Talking to the media at a hospital, the man said that he and Kiran were running away from her family to get married. He said they decided to commit suicide when men from the girl’s family closed in on them.

He said he had shot Kiran and was about to shoot himself when her relatives caught him and started beating him.

The suspect was later taken into custody by the Saddar police after a clash with men from the woman’s family who had assaulted the policemen with sticks on their attempt to arrest him.

The "honour killing" is an alien concept. I suspect it was introduced by colonial Raj. Sir Richard F Burton writing in his book "Scinde" or The Unhappy Valley, (1851) ruefully laments Muslim man's inability to protect his "honour" because of prevailing law ("Koranic," as he describes it) which does not allow killing a woman based on suspision of adultry and would lead to hanging or beheading of the perpetrator. In a footnote on page 293 Vol I, he "empathizes" with Muslim man's plight and exhorts a remedy for the situation. How ironic that "honour killing" has been attributed to Islamic law!
