Hockey Champions Trophy: Australia thrashes Pakistan 6-1

AUCKLAND: Pakistan managed to score only a single goal against Australia in the Champions Trophy hockey on Tuesday, reported Express News.

Australia has scored six goals in the pool A match in Auckland.

Pakistan, making their first Champions Trophy appearance since 2007, has not been able to win any match of the tournament.

On Monday, Pakistan lost to Spain with a 4-2 while Australia won against Great Britain with a 4-1.

While the result means Pakistan cannot make the top four teams in the eight-nation event, manager Khawaja Junaid said his side had played well and a rebuilding programme ahead of the London Games remained on track.

“We’re trying to improve. We made some mistakes but played good hockey… we’re growing steadily. We’ve seen some good skills and good movement.”

The Pakistani hockey team underwent a series of training tours throughout the year targeting the tournament which is the team’s last international assignment before the London Olympics. The build-up for this tournament also saw the ouster of veteran players and former captains Rehan Butt and Zeeshan Ashraf, paving way for promising youngsters to show their mettle.

@siddiqui

We cant play next year too. We lost to Belgians in Champions Challenge. We choked. But i am happy with the improvement of our hockey team since the appointment of a new coach. In'sha'Allah, we'll qualify for the Olympics. Be ready for the sweet revenge :)

@Salman Zahidi....... no one even wants to talk about it in Pakistan. Look at the size of the media coverage. A small little corner for the most prestigious field hockey event. Pathetic!
