Federal Minister for Social Welfare and Special Education Samina Khalid Ghurki on Thursday said that the government is committed to protecting the rights of children through necessary legislation. She said the National Commission for Child Welfare & Development (NCCWD) is closely working with the civil society and the NGOs specialising in Child Rights.
She was addressing a seminar titled “Child Rights in Pakistan Impact and Implications of 18th Constitutional organized by Society for Protection of the Rights of Child (Sparc).
The minister claimed that clauses were included in the 18 amendment relating to child rights and that the federal government now had authority to sign agreements with international community and also its implementation in the country.
She further said that children were the strategic asset of the country and provision of facilities to them was one of the government’s top priorities.
Speaking on the occasion, Chairperson NA Standing Committee on Social Welfare and Special Education, Rubina Saadat Qaim Khani, said that it is unfortunate that since the country’s independence, no government has taken any practical steps for the protection of the child rights. However, she said that present government is going to announce declaration in this regard in September.
“We need a comprehensive constitutional reform for children rights,” she concluded. Earlier, Rashid Rehman Chairman Sparc said that the government and civil society should work together.
