Mentally challenged woman kills family, sets herself alight

RAWALPINDI:

A mentally unstable woman in a village in Chak Beli Khan killed her infant niece and her mother before setting herself alight on Saturday. Saima Bibi, 30, however survived the suicide attempt and is undergoing treatment at a hospital.

The Chontra police, quoting neighbours, said that Samina was recently divorced owing to her deteriorating psychological state and was living at her brother’s house.

At around noon, when both her brothers were out, Samina slashed the throats of her mother and her six-month-old niece, Mehreen Fatima, with a kitchen knife before setting herself on fire.

Locals expressed concern over the “lethargic” approach of the police, who allegedly took three hours to respond to the “gruesome incident”.

She was mentally unstable or mentally challenged? these are two different things? did she got any treatment or not? It is so sad, this tragedy was preventable.
