PESHAWAR: Peshawar had a rude awakening on Thursday when an explosion rang out in the city at around 5:45 am.
Explosives packed in an oil (ghee) container went off outside the District Coordination Officer’s bureau early morning, destroying a wall and damaging the windows of the building. There were no reports of casualties.
A heavy police contingent cordoned off the site, and put a restriction on traffic movement in the area.
Traffic on Charsadda Road and Dalazak Road remained suspended as well, in case of “a follow-up blast”, an official at Faqirabad police station confirmed.
The explosives were locally manufactured, weighed about 500 grammes and exploded prematurely, according to the Bomb Disposal Unit personnel.
Thursday’s blast came in the midst of heavy security measures being carried out throughout the city in the wake of Muharram. Thousands of police personnel have been deployed across Peshawar to prevent any untoward situation in the provincial capital.
