ISLAMABAD: Minister for Information and Broadcasting Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan informed the National Assembly on Friday that Pakistan Television (PTV) is launching a sports channel by December to promote sports activities in the country.
Awan said that the channel is being launched on the directive of President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani.
Replying to various questions raised by parliamentarians during Question Hour, the minister said that a PTV sports channel is imperative. She also said that PTV revenues would increase by telecasting events like the cricket World Cup, hockey and football.
Awan said that PTV is being digitalised with latest technology and will compete with other private channels. The process of digitalisation will be completed by December 2012, she said.
She said that PTV Global is also being overhauled in order to project the “true image of the country” internationally. The entertainment component of PTV Global will be enhanced to provide more recreation to its viewers , she added.
Firdous Awan said PTV is effectively safeguarding ideological and geographical boarders of the country and that efforts are underway to make it a “mouth piece of people's aspirations”.

The channel was tuned at AsiaSat3. It ran for few days but just before the Pak England series, I can not tune the channel and a dollar ($) sign has come against PTV Sports Channel. So, it seems that it will not be free

Yeah that would be great. Sports are very important to keep youth busy and active in healthy activities. Good thing is that people will not need to pay anything to watch it. A good step from government after a long time.

Its good for back world people living in villages. They don't have these facilities in the past to watch a match on antena.and it must show other teams matches is well like aus,india ,sri ,sa etc.good luck ptv

There has already been launched PTV sports channel in PMLN second tenure and later it was closed by successive government/s.
@Adil What does it have to do with you living in Pakistan? My critique is based on her recent performance on other issues as well. It's not an isolated observation, and frankly I don't think she is right for this job at all. To each, his own.

Too little, too late. And while we are on the subject, who made this lady Minister for Information and Broadcasting? She has no credentials, charisma, vision (or looks) for the part. I fail to understand why so many of our educated masses with lots of great ideas go for these jobs?
