ISLAMABAD: Petroleum geoscientists have recommended that in order to tap hydrocarbon reserves including unconventional shale and tight gas reserves the government should cut down cost of security, sort out pricing issues and ensure investment in human capital to achieve sustainable growth.

The recommendations were made during a two-day Annual Technical Conference (ATC) 2011 which ended on Wednesday. It was jointly organised by the Society of Petroleum Engineers and Pakistan Association of Petroleum Geoscientists.

Almost all sessions of the conference focused on exploration in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, security issues and exploitation of unconventional energy resources.

During the conference, oil and gas professionals mulled over this year’s theme “Energy security through indigenous resources”. They also discussed the challenges faced by the oil and gas industry in meeting demand with a possible solution in exploring unconventional shale and tight gas reserves.

Petroleum Secretary Muhammad Ejaz Chaudhry, who had inaugurated the conference, said its recommendations and those of other brainstorming sessions held in the country would be part of the upcoming petroleum policy.

The dialogue ended with a note that across the world research on innovative solutions for extracting unconventional reserves was of high priority and Pakistan was no exception.
