The attacker was identified as Harvinder Singh, who claimed he was protesting against rising prices of basic food items.
Singh seems to have a history of such attacks. Earlier, he has attacked Indian telecoms minister, Sukh Ram. The minister was unhurt but shaken.
Pawar was attacked as he left the offices of the New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC).

@Indian: (1)I agree with you that a criminal is a criminal young or old. And that son of mother india did a better job slapping an elderly and fatherly figure, as " maan and samman" is given more importance in "civilized" country ,anyway mother india knows her children better .You may cock and brag as much as you want on this website ,But in an unethical matter and topic what our army had to do any thing? ,how did you quote our army so well and how you could be an expert on them what they teach us here? ,why did you think to quote them who had nothing to do with this matter.Rememeber they are the best army in the world both morally and skilfully,far better than yours ,no need to explain what they are doing in Kashmir.they are doing exactly what Mother india has taught them to do raping and looting but I cannot say for sure what our POWs had done so "bad" and "wrong" there, while they were in your home(india) that you had not been able to forget them and still remember them! (2) I cannot understand your reference of OBL, osama was an arab national and he had been in enmity with America, Americans were after him and he was hiding in Pakistan, and like most Pakistani and muslims I never liked him and am not advocating him, his policy his philosophy were wrong that only brought sadness in people’s life,all over the world. OBL was a matter between Pakistan and usa, in particular ,he never talked about india, he never talked about hindus, even alqaueda was not active in india, now why you were dying to remember a dead man so bitterly even long after his demise. What did he do so “harsh” and “bitter” to you and your people in particular that made you to remember him so vigorously as a bad man, as there live so many criminals in your country too.Is your country clean of them.? (3) I don’t know about karma, but according to Hinduism a person is re-born seven times . as a muslim I don’t believe it but I believe in your belief. Could you possibly tell me only for my interest in the subject ,that what were you in your previous janam?A king or something else according to your deeds.What happens after those seven lives.How do they pay for bad deeds.
who hurled the shoes at bush was dragged and left with damaged bones as if the body guards were stopping him from aiming missiles but what we watched in India!!!!!!!!!!!!
It is not right to physically hit an old man. This kind of irrational act cannot be justified as free speech. It is sad that people are losing their morals this fast.
@BruteForce: 'Action has an equal and opposite reaction'.
@BruteForce: Well said. I don't think taking law into your hands is a way to go. A bigger slap is what politicians get when they lose an election and let's keep it that way. India is a democracy and we don't need such things.
@Indian:
If one thinks that way then all acts of violence can be attributed to Karma. I still believe this is a shameful act.
@BruteForce: Dude you said you believe in 'Karma' and an important element of it is that you reap what you sow. What is happening is happening and will have ripples which will manifest as the present in the future. Kindly go through 'Prarabdha karma' and 'sanchita karma'. And you, me and harvinder are also elements of karma. Karma is only acting through him and as him on Harvinder. This knowledge of happening/doing of things comes from civilization.
@Indian:
No, my friend. Violence and such behavior start small, before you know it it turns into a huge fireball.
If you ask me I believe Pawar is corrupt. But, that is not a justification. I believe in Karma, if he is corrupt he will get his justice, let us not be God and pronounce him Guilty.
We are a civilized race, the decedents of a tolerant culture. Let us not belittle it.
@Arindom: Free Khalistan, Free Kashmir and Free Assam/Nagaland too.
@Ikramuddin Akbar
I think the Indians are celebrating because they invested so much hope in democracy. When democracy keeps giving them thugs and mafias, they resort to be ones too.
@Ikramuddin Akbar:
1) There is a difference b/w a human and a God. The least we can do is be human. That is exactly what Harvinder did. He got angry at injustice against poor.
2) If Army general in Pakistan have taught you that they (elders) getting on your rear and get away with it is fine. You are very welcome in continuing your masochism. We don't. Criminals are criminals young or old. So, Osama is old and does that justify him doing what he does??
Every country have same kind of politicians(most of them) they live a lavish lifestyle, meeting each others, sympathize for common man but they are above the laws in the Geneva Convention or UN. All Politicians have more money than half of the world's population.
@Indian: A youth who slaps his elder emerges as a living god for you ,what if he gets a slap,will he still be a ?
The best one was from anna 'sirf ek mara'...but this is bad...people come to politics for respect not disgrace.
@Baloch: You think Indians are helping you , what a joke , today more than half of India wants separation , those who are enemies of their own people , how would they help you, Maybe You forhget that they helped in getting a free Bangladesh & after that became Bangladeshs Biggest enemy , many popliticiabns in Indian bengal are striving to get a separate State for Hindus of Bangladesh, so think once what you think is right or not.
@M.A.S: Rightly said. We can organize a cricket match to decide who will take kashmir,Cricket will decide who will win the next war between India and Pakistan.We'll make our army to play cricket.
@Patrick: @Nick:@Khan one the basis of certain instants you can not generalize the whole society. Since every generalization is always wrong. And as per William Blake "to generalize is to be an idiot.
@Karim:
Yeah! slapping is difficult but, shooting bullets at public representatives must be easy in Pakistan. BTW, are we still talking about "civilized Society"?
Violence against anyone, guilty or not guilty, is a shameful offense. I will not support this, neither should any Indian.
What kind of culture do we want to instill in our kids? Be the Judge, Jury and the executioner themselves? No respect for the law? No respect for procedure? Do we want to be like Pakistan?
This is a shameful act. Even more shameful that many Indians are supporting it.
@Baloch: Yeah! Free Balochistan!!
@Indian: One slap and so many reactions! hah, from slap to youth to pakistani to Islam, what a raw bravery by you people.Dont worry my comments have been deleted by ET, for your pleasure. the religion you hate and dread most is still in India. So dont invite others to drag out your religion in ring. right!
@Hu Jintao: I think sum ting wong with you.
Our ministers and khadim aala should not go near the youth especielly tehrike insaaf people
@Baloch: Indian :). we don't need your help. If, ever, we need independence from Pakistan and Iran we would do it ourselves. Our current precarious situation is equally India's fault as well. Due to unfounded reasons, establishment keeps thinking India is siding with us. Leave us.
Anna's first comment when he heard of it: "bus - ek hi thappar mara?"
@Patrick: Nobody in Pakistan knows or cares who dawood ibrahim is why do indians keep bringing this up?
Harvinder Singh - must be nominated for "Indian of the Year 2011" award!!! A true lion-hearted Sardarji!! Great Job!!
@Proud Baloch: They are here to help Baloch free themselves.
Wow look at all the Indians here. I wonder why do they even come to ET.
Reminds me of Times of India where Indians show their true class in abusing anyone who they disagree with.
@Karim: what a joke!! In this 'civil society' who cares about slapping when its so easy to shoot, right sir.
@Ikramuddin Akbar:
Oh sorry! They should be sitting in a bunker in Afghanistan training how to kill the un-Islamic people of the world. Pakistani youth are so productive!! And yeah meanwhile we the Indian youth will kick the butts of those buggers who don't deserve to be sitting up there and make our way in to decision making for India..
Forget everything.... I am missing Ali Tanoli's comments!!!!!
Harvinder Singh ki jai ho!
Well done Singh
TV channels are showing the incident 24x7. Till now, he must have been slapped a MILLION times. Well done.
Being civilised in india and Pakistan can be compared through a very simple method. Look at the crowds at the cricket stadiums. I hope everyone remembers Karachi in 2004 when india defeated Pakistan in front of 40k odd people and how they clapped and cheered the people across the border. Whereas, we have seen the civilized people of bangalore how they boed the players from Pakistan. Yes, india is civilised that is why a stadium of 100k was kicked out just because home team was about to loose the match.
Anyways:
@MD: please don't call the kettle black. First try to clean yourself up. Yes we are not the best, but we are at least better then the rest. Try to find out what your military is doing in Kashmir, Chattisgarh and Assam. Please search on the internet for the human rights groups study on dehli. more then 10 rape cases are registered everyday in dehli alone. Where is the justice in your country which no one is talking of. Where are the killers of our people killed in Samjota express. Where is the justice for the muslims killed in your Gujrat. Showering patels on a murderer is just a stupid sight which majority of Pakistanis laugh off. Please, correct your house in order instead of wasting time on a Pakistani webpage and talking something that has no meaning.
Your random youth slap your ministers for high food prices, our random bodyguard shoots ours in the back for perceived blasphemous comments!
Different priorities apparently...
@Ikramuddin Akbar,
Pakistani youths are not monkeys,do you think you are on a coconut tree.We haven’t reached up to your level yet.
Oh yea!! Thank god that your youth or even adults are far far "ahead" of us. Our youths are just slapping a corrupt politician, but your youth, oh no, even the most responsible "adults", the lawyers, are showering rose petals on the daylight and self confessed proud killers like Qadri. I love this "backwardness" of my country, India!
@ Ikramuddin Akbar...you dont read newpaper properly...even not comments above describing the so called civilized pak society.....still dont understand, then read what few men did to a woman in Mian Channu....then comment......
@Karim: Even if we agree on your figures of just 5% ... almost all of such acts are done by men in our society so that 5% becomes adult male population only. Half of the population of Pakistan is under 18 years old ... then half are female .. if you take out both of those ... It comes down to around 5,000,0000 (five crore) or 50 million and in that case 2.5 million are 5% you are referring to.
@neelam.kohare:
See the mirror 1st We are the responsible of all this. Any one knows him before? What he was? Can u imagine what he will be after this? Question should be ask from our self’s before polling our vote !!! ___ !!!
because of him several farmers have committed suicide in the past ...he has so much amount of money stashed in swiss bank, he deserves to be kicked out of the country, not just slapped !!
we should get our caste at a higher level.at least in schedule caste and not in open.government should give us our independence. okkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk
next time slap when they come for asking vote....later they r out of reach
This event only reflects the fact that when expectations are not met by the people in power, the common man loses control.
Hurling shoe on Chidamberam and slapping Pawar .How long common man will tolerate corrupt, dishonest and worthless politicians. We are helpless in a democracy like ours.People are compelled to survive with them. Anna's comment shows his anger with politicians dealing Janlokpal Bill but the extreme is yet to come.
Hi, I think this type of incidence need to happen in our country time to time with our politicians. It’s helpful to open their eyes. Now a day’s govt likes doing anything everywhere corruption & because that price are gown up and up.
Great Keep this Up.
Singh is King
Great Job Done. Keep it up.
Singh is King
@Karim: Yes so civilized that this happened : 1. Salman Taseer got murdered by a member of his security detail for seeking equal rights for minorities. His killer gets flower petals thrown over him by LAWYERS! 2. Shabaz Bhatti also murdered for similar reasons. 3. Osama Bin Laden thought pakistan was the best place for him to hide out ! 4. Dawood Ibrahim , teh well known gangster is treated like celebrity.
I could continue but you get the point ?
@Zalim Singh: Zalim Singh or Zalim ET... lol
Clap-Clap-Clap, way to go Harvinderji. If there is one minister who 'deserved it', its Pawar (to hell with ahimsa).
Hand of India.
@Khan: yOU PROVED YOUR POINT BY putting such a usless para.
Do not if you really are Khan are just putting it up
This is being congratulated. So why was everybody sPeaking against that brave man who threw a shoe at that mass murderer war criminal George Bush?
Actually in pakistan majority are content to slumber and dwindle along as long as they are not getting harmed, they will never be united and stand up to face the corrupted leaders. so yes it will never happen in pak, not beocz we are civilised soicety but rather becoz we lack conscience
Sharad pawar deserves much more than that.He is the king of corruption ranging from Sugar mafia, Onion Mafia, BCCI, IPL, Sensex and MCX manipulation, Lavasa projects, in cahoots with Dawood ibrahim and much more.If his swiss account can be opened it will worth more than the combined wealth of all politicians in india(minus sonia gandhi of course, she is so sacred to touch)
Mr Hu Jintao : guess what ? had this beeen happeened in PRC..the guy would have been in graveyard the next moment..just because we are free society, a guy got able to beat a central minister , infront of media, and now will get free fair trail..
Mr hu. next time dont even dare to write free speech, demorcracy in any forum..it doesnt suit you with the name you have..
good very good..
@Khan: I think you are also referring to the 5% of the population.
wah,wah
@man.IN: we are a civilized nation in general. only about 5% could be considered otherwise
Sharad Pawar slapped by youth at NDMC centre ENJOY !!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QRcHJiE9u2k&feature=youtu.be
@Karim: Civilized... Ha ha ha ha.. Great joke of this century
@Hu Jintao nope CHINA is the only democratic country. i don't blame you for forgetting tianmen, tibet, uighurs.
@Karim: Please don't take short sightedness for Patriotism ... We are not civilized society not any more at least ... in a civilized society an elected government isn't kicked out before its full term .. neither its asked all the time by each and every opposition to call for mid term elections .. A mob doesn't kill unarmed civilian on the streets but present them to the court .. Police/FC doesn't shoot people on sight .. and every now and then people don't take lives of each others on streets for political reasons. We may not slap ministers but we do shoot governors in broad day light. We seriously need introspection to address our ills but who ever tries or speaks truth is labeled an agent and what not.
@Karim: Pakistan is a civilized Society << was this supposed to be a joke?
@Zalim Singh: Pakistan is a civilized Society. Moreover, ministers are generally out of reach of common people
hmm, not possible cannot go close to minister.
Its a fact that he is the biggest price manupulator of agri commodities specially Sugar and Onions. He deserves much more than what he got.
First the Aussies mishandled him at the ICC ceremony and now a fellow Indian. My Pawar is a marked man!
Isn't india land of free speech and world largest democracy
i think i was mistaken.
I don't blame the young man. I would do the same if I had the chance.
Way to go Bro ! XD
cheers. Let us see if any Pakistani youth can replicate this.
