CJ bars sessions judge from his court, chamber

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) Chief Justice (CJ) Khawaja Muhammad Sharif has restrained the Lahore district and sessions judge, Zawar Ahmad Sheikh, from sitting in his court.

The direction was issued on the demand of members of the Lahore Bar Association (LBA).

Sheikh had resumed work sitting in his chambers on Wednesday after nine days. Earlier, Justice Ijaz Ahmed Chaudhry the acting CJ, had stopped him from working. LBA members had locked his courtroom during their protest against his alleged lack of courtesy towards lawyers and were demanding his transfer.

On Wednesday, LHC CJ restrained him from visiting the court and directed him to perform his duties at the high court till the issue between the district bar and bench was resolved.

The CJ issued this direction after a meeting with a lawyers’ delegation on his first working day after a week long vacation.

The delegation comprised of elected representatives of the Punjab Bar Council, LHC bar and LBA besides some senior members of these bars.

The CJ heard the point of view of the lawyers who also informed him that Sheikh had started sitting in his chamber despite the issue being unresolved.

They demanded that the CJ stop the judge from visiting the court till the resolution of the dispute.

They also complained that he was lobbying against the lawyers by calling his subordinate judges to his chamber.

The CJ said that he would meet the judges of the district judiciary on Thursday before he gave a ruling.  He said the matter should be resolved amicably.
