Over a 100 traders and shopkeepers of Jama Cloth, Timber Market and others staged a protest demonstration at MA Jinnah Road, near Light House, against persistent street crime in the area.
The protest was sparked by the death of a vendor during an alleged robbery on Monday. The traders demanded that a permanent security check post be set up in the area to stop such incidents for good.
They burnt tires on the road causing a massive traffic jam and warned of more protests if street crimes were not curbed by the law enforcers.
According to the traders, unidentified men cut off the wires of closed-circuit cameras installed in the market. The police were informed but nothing was done about it.
The police reached the site and assured the traders of their full cooperation. SHO Agha Asadullah said that security was beefed up in the markets and they were on a look out for street criminals.
Meanwhile, according to an official hand out by the Sindh police, IG Mushtaq Shah took notice of the killing and ordered an inquiry into the matter. He directed that the area police to ensure patrolling near shopping centres, jewellery markets, wholesale markets and departmental stores.
