KARACHI:

The SHO of Darakshan police station, Nasarullah Khan, and a sub-inspector in charge of the Sea View police post, Ateeq Afridi, have been suspended on charges of illegally detaining a teenager.

Police chief Mushtaq Shah suspended them on the orders of the home minister, Manzoor Wassan, who raided the police post after he was tipped off. He found a fourteen-year-old boy, Wahab, handcuffed at the premises and set him free.

Wahab said that he was held in captivity for nine days. He was involved in a theft case and police demanded a bribe from him after he was caught. He was not able to pay them.

The suspended officers countered these claims by saying that they had detained Wahab to glean information about his accomplices, who had managed to evade arrest.

They said that the boy had been in their custody for only three days and they were trying to persuade him to help find his accomplices.

DIG Shaukat Ali Shah said that the officers are facing a departmental inquiry. The police are investigating whether they detained the boy after doing the paperwork.
