Uruguaya star striker Luis Suarez scored four times to give the Copa America holders a 4-0 victory over Chile and maintain their place on top of the Latin American 2014 World Cup qualifying standings.
The 24-year-old ensured Uruguay extended their lead to three points over Argentina, who were held to a disappointing 1-1 draw by Bolivia. Suarez was delighted at his performance.
“It’s the kind of thing that you dream of doing,” said Suarez. “I’ve been told that no Uruguayan has ever scored four goals in one qualifier before, but I couldn’t have done it without the rest of the team.”
Elsewhere, Bolivia salvaged a point against Argentina, whose line-up included Barcelona star Lionel Messi. Messi admitted he was feeling frustrated and warned that his side needed to win on Tuesday against Colombia. “I’m frustrated because we had chances,” he said. “We need to win whatever happens.”
Meanwhile, Paraguay beat Ecuador 2-1 and Colombia drew 1-1 with Venezuela.
