Man threatens to set himself on fire

ISLAMABAD: Jhan Muhammad, a resident of Nawabshah, threatened to set himself on fire unless action is taken against the murderers of his son.

Jhan has been protesting outside the National Press Club for the past one month and is seeking justice for the death of his son, Muhammad Mithal Sheikh. Mithal, who was 19-years-old, was killed on April 11, 2009, according to his father.

Talking to The Express Tribune, Jhan Muhammad said that four men came to his barber shop and attempted to extort money from his son. The men pushed and abused his son telling him that the shop and the neighbourhood belonged to them. They told him that this shop was a privilege not a right. When his son refused to comply, “it turned ugly and the next day he was killed,” Muhammad said.

The police lodged an FIR, but nothing has been done even after the passage of a year and Mithal’s killers have not been brought to justice.

Jhan alleged that the men were from influential backgrounds which is why the police were reluctant to take action against them.

He appealed to the provincial government and the Chief Justice of Pakistan to take action against his son’s killers.
