More than 100 young scientists from across Sindh participated in the closing ceremony of the provincial science fair, at DA Degree College for Men on Friday.
The fair was organised under the Intel Education Initiative which holds science fairs for grades 9 to 12 all over the world. The winners from Sindh will participate in a national science fair which will be held in January.
Around 1,500 young scientists from across the globe will be invited to International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in the US. The finalists compete for more than four million dollars and international scholarships. The next ISEF will be held in Pittsburgh.
Fatima Sohail, of Defense Authority Model High School, represented Pakistan in Los Angeles last May at Intel ISEF. She presented her project, which was called “Generation of electricity through reflection and refraction on ionic liquid.”
“I spent only Rs3,000 and now I have my own 0.137 watts of electricity,” she said. Cheap electricity can be produced, only if financial support is provided, she added.
The best group project in physics was “Infinite mega-wind motion” made by Muhammad Shahrukh Khan, Ahmed Raza and Haseeb Ali Mustafa from Sir Adamajee Institute.
In individual projects, “Micro-balance” by Haya Qadri, from the Aga Khan Higher Secondary School, and “Development of new technology using selected indigenous ethno-medicinal plants in leather dyeing” by Muhammad Zaeem Khan, of DA Degree College for Men, were the winners.
