The assistant professor at the department of genetics, Dr Shakeel Farooqui, told The Express Tribune that he got there as soon as he received a phone call from Alam’s wife Saba Masood. He said that a couple of students in a car were trying to overtake Alam. “He parked the car outside the commerce department and started to scold the students,” he said. “Instead of listening to him, the students started to hit him. They even left for a little while but returned soon after with more boys.” The assistant professor added that he had tried to defend Alam but was beaten up in the process.
The student’s car (AHR 819) was seized by the Rangers and handed over to the university’s security officer for further investigation. Dr Farooqui claims that there was a possibility the young men weren’t even students at the university.
The associate professor from the department of applied chemistry, Dr Riaz Ahmed, met Alam at the Darus Sehat Hospital, and said that the doctors suspected that there were some internal injuries. None of this could be confirmed when this report was filed. Dr Ahmed blamed the administration for not providing the teachers with proper security.
Dr Haris of the KU Teachers Society condemned the incident and said that the teachers had decided to boycott all classes on Friday. He added that they were going to have a meeting at 10 am on Friday in the auditorium to decide what course of action to take. “We all want security but cannot have a guard with us all the time,” he said. “The lack of proper security is the root of all our problems.” The vice-chancellor said that action would be taken against the students.
The faculty did not point fingers towards any political party and added that Dr Alam had been teaching and residing at the university for nearly five years.
