LAHORE:

Advocate General (AG) Khawaja Haris has again tendered his resignation to the Punjab government, this time over appointments made at his office, sources told The Express Tribune.

Haris had conveyed his concerns about the appointments to Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif but they went unheeded, said sources in the AG’s office.

He is also said to be disappointed with the government’s choice of Ashtar Ausaf Ali for the office of prosecutor general.

Advocate Robeel Raza, an associate of Haris, confirmed that the advocate general had tendered his resignation –it has not yet been accepted   and returned his official vehicle. He said that Haris worked from his personal office on Wednesday.

Biography

Haris, who has been a lawyer to the Sharif family for several years, was initially appointed AG in June 2008.

He resigned from his office on February 25, 2009, in protest against the imposition of governor’s rule in the province by the federal government in the wake of Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif’s disqualification by the then Supreme Court.

Raza Farooq, nephew of Justice (retired) Khalilur Rehman Ramday, was appointed additional advocate general in April 2009 and given the additional charge of AG. He later resigned from the office citing personal reasons, and Haris was reappointed in March 2010.

He again offered his resignation from the post in June 2010. Sources said at the time that Haris had done so on the directions of the PML-N leadership, as he was likely to be engaged as a lawyer to represent the Sharif family. But his resignation was not accepted and he continued as advocate general.
