The Pakistan Medical Association has appealed to Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif to sanction the start of MBBS classes at the Post Graduate Medical Institute (PGMI) Medical College from the current session this month.
Speaking at a press conference, PMA officials said that the required facilities already existed at the PGMI and no extra funds were required to start classes there for undergraduate medical students. They said that the staff and infrastructure at the institute met the requirements of the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council, which regulates medical colleges. They said that classes for 100 students could start straight away.
The PMA officials also demanded that 400 senior registrars and 300 district specialists be regularised as there was a shortage of consultants at public hospitals.
The PMA officials included Dr M Ashraf Nizami, Dr M Tanveer Anwar, Dr Izhar Ahmed Chaudhry, Dr Shahid Malik, Dr Ehsanur Rehman, Dr Sabahat Habib Khan and Dr Salman Kazmi.
