“We can confirm that 13 International Security Assistance Force (Isaf) members have died,” said an Isaf spokesman in Kabul, giving no further details.
A Pentagon spokesman later confirmed all 13 soldiers killed were American. Three civilians and a police officer were also killed in the attack on a convoy of military vehicles, a spokesman for the Afghan interior ministry said.
A Taliban spokesperson claimed responsibility for what he called a suicide attack on a bus carrying foreign troops. “Our suicide bomber, Abdur Rehman Hazarbuz, rammed his vehicle packed with 700 kilogrammes of explosives into the bus in the Darul Amn area of Kabul,” Zabiullah Mujahid said in a statement.
He claimed that the bus was completely destroyed and all 25 people on board were killed.
Excluding aircraft crashes, it was the deadliest single incident for foreign troops since the war began in 2001. In mid-August, 30 US troops, including 25 Special Operations Forces, were killed when their Chinook helicopter was shot down by the Taliban in Wardak province.
Thick black smoke could be seen rising from a fire still raging at the scene, cordoned off by Afghan and Isaf soldiers, while fire hoses were putting out another blaze nearby.
Nato’s coalition forces were seen carrying the charred bodies of some of those killed away on stretchers from the wreckage of the bombed bus.
In the southern Uruzgan province, an Afghan soldier opened fire on foreign forces, killing three Australian army trainers.
The alliance force said two service members were killed and one other later died of his injuries after “an individual wearing an Afghan National Army uniform apparently turned his weapon on Afghan and coalition forces.” It said the shooter was also killed in the incident but gave no further details.
General Abdul Hameed, commander of 205 Atal corps in the south said an Afghan soldier with three years’ experience had carried out the shooting. He said six other Australian troops and one Afghan officer had been wounded.
“At around 8:30 this morning an ANA soldier named Darwish who had been serving as an ANA soldier for the past three years opened fire on a group of Australian military officers, killing three of them and injuring six others as well as one ANA officer,” said Hameed.

@csmann: You are right and this is all happening as a consequence of US' and NATO's troops action. In other words this is as you saw so shall you reap or tit for tat.You leave Afghanistan peacefully and never face such these types of sudden, massive and collateral accidents, deaths, damages and lose of precious military equipments in the hilly country Afghanistan.Other wise remember and never forget that the hilly country Afghanistan shall be the next graveyard of US' and NATO's troops in the near future if US' and NATO's troops don't withdraw from Afghanistan as soon as possible on priority basis.
This is a great news in a long time and totally made my day. The AF resistance must not give up and should believe in Allah(swt) to guide them and protect them. May Allah(swt) show mercy and save the people of AF, Iraq & the whole world (ameen).
@MarkH: In ten years, you haven't done a penny's worth of job that might be considered a success. Iraqis and Afghanis are coming in and going out of your bases any given day of the week and blowing up your soldiers into smitherens. Deal with them first before making plans of Pakistan.
@MarkH: You are another delusional American living in la la land, who clearly hasn't learnt of some of the flawed and disastrous policies your men at the top have been nurturing all these years. We all know how successful Iraq and Afghanistan are - both are a mess and a dump, worse than they were before the American invasion. It's funny how, despite wasting billions already and after getting a good bit of thrashing in both Iraq and Afghanistan, you still dream of putting up new wars.
Looking at the way the American mindset works, the USA will be down in the drain in a couple of centuries (not that it already isn't right now. Just look outside the window; there's a lot of people in the world who don't love you.)
Oh and by the way, just remember one thing: The day you "carpet bomb" the tribal areas, or make grand plans to invade more countries, that might as well also be the day when your beloved America disintegrates into oblivion. All other superpowers of the world learnt it the hard way, so it's not surprising that you're willing to go down the same path.
@MarkH: you are right Mark;human rights dont mean anything to these beasts;how long one can be nice to the poisonous snakes;just forget about collateral damage for a week and give them a taste of desert shield.
US is fighting a war which they cannot win. Afghans will prefer to die then surrender infront of foreign occupied forces.
Assalam-o-Allaikum Warahmatullah. This is the start of love why do you cry? See what happens in future with you US' and NATO's troops?
Awesome!
The Americans are tasting their own medicine which they invented decades ago. What you sow, you shall reap.
US/ NATO Announcement: Terrorists came from Safe Heaves of Pakistan.... Karzai Announcement: Suicide Bomber was holding Pakistan's ID Card...
so what inducements of after-life advantages the mullahs use to recruit female bombers;off course,it wont be one of their daughters;but a child of some poverty-stricken , desperate family
@Afghan: Yes, a massive blow, because we all know the US only has 20 soldiers at their command at max, right? The only massive blow it delivered was to the concept of peace talks. ...moving along May as well just get it over with by carpet bombing the tribal areas. Dragging it out just gives them hope of a comeback. The US should stop giving Pakistan and the militant groups false hope. To hell with the overdone niceties. It's giving them a big head and delusions of success. For these things to stop being messy is to bluntly and coldly to show them how they really look in the mirror without all of this distortion turning it into a fun house mirror. Get serious with the attacks like when entering Iraq and Afghanistan and it'll be over with in a week. Iraq and Afghanistan actually had the ability to put up a fight, unlike Pakistan.
13 US soldiers killed in this attack, one Canadian also killed, else where a afghan army solider killed his three Australian Trainers!!!!!!!!!!
@ET:
You should post the updated news-related pictures along the stories. The above one is not from the incident of today. This is the picture of the aftermath of a car-bomb explosion that took place about a month and a half ago in Lashkargah, the capital city of Helmand, Afghaistan.
Now this is a massive blow to the US Forces in Afghanistan. An unlikely incident in which the proportion of the US military causalities is higher then the civilian. This man (suicide bomber) really wanted to fight for 'the cause' unlikely others who blow up them selves in crowded markets or mosques.
