GUJRANWALA:

Thousands of water and development authority (Wapda) employees protested against the induction of the new Gujranwala electric power company (Gepco) chief.

The protesters said that the new chief was not qualified and had no background of working for the company. The rally was taken out from the Gepco chief office and the protesters chanted slogans and danced in the streets as several dhol walas accompanied the rally.

The protesters said that Gepco was already recovering Rs60.5 billion annually and that the appointment of a new chief was unnecessary at this time. “Also they cannot just bring someone from outside who has no links with Wapda or Gepco,” said a Gepco worker Muhammad Zaman.

The protesters said that hundreds of employees would be turned out of their jobs if someone from outside the organisation was made chief. “They should have promoted from within. This new chief knows nothing about running such a large organisation,” the protesters said.
