Capable of carrying both nuclear and conventional warheads, Hatf-VII is a “low-flying, terrain-hugging missile with high maneuverability, pin-point accuracy and radar avoidance features,” said a press release from the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).
The missile was first tested in 2005, with a range of 500 km, and then in 2007 with an enhanced range of 700 km.
The only surface-to-surface subsonic cruise missile in Pakistan’s missile arsenal, Hatf-VII compares with India’s Nirbhay and the American Tomahawk missile, albeit 300 km shy of their range.
For navigation, the missile incorporates the Terrain Contour Matching (TERCOM) and Digital Scene Matching and Area Co-relation (DSMAC) technologies, the press release added.
While the Pakistani military does not share details on cost of its missiles, a comparable subsonic cruise missile, the US’ Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile, costs about $1.54 million per unit, according to US Department of Defence’s 2012 budget request summary.
Missile launch vehicle
In addition to validating the design parameters of the weapon system, the special feature of Friday’s launch was the validation of a new multi-tube, missile launch vehicle (MLV), the press release said.
“The three-tube MLV enhances manifold the targeting and deployment options in the conventional and nuclear modes,” the statement said.
With its shoot-and-scoot capability, the MLV provides a major force multiplier effect for target employment and survivability, it added.
The test was witnessed by Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee General Khalid Shameem Wynne, Director-General Strategic Plans Division Lt-Gen (retd) Khalid Ahmed Kidwai along with senior officers from the armed forces, scientists and engineers.
President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani also congratulated the scientists and engineers on the successful launch. (With additional input from APP)

@Paras Vikmani: @BruteForce: Did North Korea Nuke You? or were you privy to Black markets?
@ashok sai: Have they Reached India Way....
@ let there be peace,
Its re-tested because it was repainted....so testing to check if paint stays
@Normal: Cruise missiles are for land targets, not air targets.
Best Regards :)
@ashok sai: Missiles are made to take out large military/civil installations and not a bunch of Motorcycle borne guerrillas equipped with AK-47s ... I was expecting a little more common sense from a regular ET commentators.
@R S JOHAR Wow, you suggest threatening the US with ICBMs to get more aid! When the US calls your bluff, what are you going to do, start a war that will result in all of Pakistan being incinerated!
If Pakistan has this kind of money to blow than why do you beg money for flood and earth quake victims??
@Agha: true patriot cant shoot down babur and any cruise missile because it is ABM and not anti-cruise missile system. heard of quick reaction low level interception missiles. there duty is to shoot down these missiles. India has this system. for you to believe it even china has this system in form of HQ-16, it can shoot down missile( subsonic like babur) at the altitude of 10 m. moreover India and france both are now replacing older system with new indo-french project called maitri.
you are full generation behind. world is moving to hypersonic missiles( India no exception) and pakistan is still stuck with sub sonic missiles
for what?
Very well argued. @Observer:
let fry it i am sure it will feed many poor Pakistanis :(
@Shahid: Strange that you haven't even read the article - 'The only surface-to-surface subsonic cruise missile in Pakistan’s missile arsenal, Hatf-VII compares with India’s Nirbhay and the American Tomahawk missile, albeit 300 km shy of their range.'. I agree that you guys bring out fireworks whenever ISPR releases an article of this merit, but it would still be worth your time if you read the newspaper articles in full.
@Zeeshan: "India is 4-5 larger than Pakistan. The size comparison would be smaller if you minus a quarter of your territory under Maoist." By your logic In that case Pakistan is non existant.
at least we are making progress in something. Job well done Engineers. :))
I Dont the why every time Indians fell angry here in Express Tribune Blog whenever Pakistan launches something whether its missile or any other space program. Pata nai in ko takleef kya hoti hai. come on guys get some life.
Tribune! give oppertunity to all readers to express their views on this "comments" forum. My views on this topic,appreciating our Scientists and their performace has been ignored by tribune editors.
Why call only politicians and not a few members of the public? Yes, why not? The common man is equally patriotic or not?
It is indeed a great feeling; a sense of euphoria. But the question arises when did they design this. Why not announce it before hand and allow the public to watch its launch. The public are if not more than equally patriotic to the country as the armed forces are.
The politicians can take a hike because they are not patriotic to the country; with a few exceptions. If the Americans put boots on the ground in Waziristan then hopefully a stealth missile will be fired and the US won't know where it came from. Right?
Time will only tell. Let better sense prevail on both sides. Please accept my Salams.
Aaahhh. Yummy.......Today all pakistanis had a good meal. Now time to sleep. Will wait till the next test, thats where the next meal will come from.
@stevenson:
If a majority of Indians who don’t have access to a toilet are happy about Indian missiles, why shouldn’t “grass eating” Pakistanis take pride in their weapons?
Very valid question. Pakistan has every right to spend as much money as it want on weapons and choose to "eat grass". The difference is Indians are still growing their economy and GDP at 8-10% rate. Soon every Indian will have a toilet. The reason why the military spending will have a much larger impact on the Pakistanis as compared to India is that while Pakistan spends over 12% of its GDP on the military (all defense spending, pensions etc., debt servicing for past military purchases) while India is pending only about 2% of its GDP. Now, how can Pakistan sustain this and still make economic progress? I am sure the Indians will be delighted to see Pakistan spend more and more money on the military and destroy itself economically.
Forgot that India started the missile and nuclear arms race in South Asia?
Actually, it was the China that made India go for nukes after it invaded India in 1962.
This shows in world that Pak Army is superiour technology to West! Now just say to mother-in-law hillery that we can't to do u any more favours these technology can ilustate that US should thinking 1 thousands time before touch Pakistan sovernty. Also Mossad shud b stay far away when to see this. lol for US wimps
We are rich and powerful nation with all the expensive toys that the big rich boys have. So what if our people are hungry, in dark, without good education or healthcare. These civil needs would be dealt with later when there would be surplus cash. So what if there are flood victims in cold? The world is unfair to Pakistan and is not providing enough aid. These expensive weapons would keep Pakistan safe from the terrorists (our actual and active enemies) and feed the population well. While we malign civilian govt for corruption, all the achievements are due to the army. This is a systemic way of de-legitimizing the elected govt in Pakistan for a long time.
So when will Pakistan make its first diesel engine and pay the salaries of railway men ?
good 4 pakistan..
India already has a hypersonic cruise missile with a 1000 kilogram capacity called Shourya range more than 700 kms.. with stealth capability ..as reported by express tribune last month
@Adeeb: enemies exist in your and pakistanis brain only;cant face and destroy them with missiles
Congrats to the Pakistani military but draining tons of money to produce these weapons at the cost of the livelihoods of the people doesnt make sense to me. Pakistan already has capabilities to strike india. That is enough of a deterant. Wasting money on other technology is rather stupid. Let me put it this way. Germany fought a war with the whole world 65 years back. They have no missiles and airforce of any significance. Where would you rather live. Pakistan with its missiles that will just get rusty r Germany. Do you actually know the only nuclear power in Continental Europe is France and if Germany ever gets attacked France will retaliate against the aggressor. Funny how these two countries with complety different cultures and that hated each other can do this.
India and Pakistan still believe in these stupid tactics. Economic ddomination is the only way to gain advantage. The days of miltary power are long gone.
Stealth technology in missiles is all good. But the response from any country getting an attack will be the end of Pakistan. Its not like once you bomb a place the other country will wonder who did it (Yes now an attack might be more difficult to prevent). We Indians and pakistanis are just stupid and deserve our fate. We beat our chests when we make useless missiles and our happy watching our countrymen live in poverty and die of dengue. This is a really sad truth. Lucky for india they are heading in the right direction slowly but taking plenty of detours on the way. Pakistan is just lost. Good Luck to all the peace lovers out there. Be proud of this development my Pakistani brothers but alot of introspection is needed.
@Khalis
lol Dream on buddy, not even patriot missile can detect terrain-hugging cruise missiles.
Now next step will be to build Stealth Trains, Stealth Electricity, Stealth Water and as such we will all have the "Capabilities" to have Stealth Eyes. Our justice system is already laced with Stealth Capabilities. Oh, I forgot to mention our Stealth Jehadi groups which we can not see from our own eyes and others have to point us where they exist.
How about something as spectacular in education, health, water supply, good nutrition, family planning, roads, bridges, factories, and so forth?
When will this madness stop?
@Zeeshan: India's land and water territories are @10 times Pakistan. If you exclude Balochistan, then Pakistan is only 1/2 its size.
Since when did you become the spokesperson for NATO or China?!! How would little boys like Pakistan know the games big boys play. It are not on the same table. Just because they are Paki's masters does not mean Pak is one of them. Anyways, you would never know India's enemies and Pakistan is certainly not one of them. India see it as just a nuisance.
Nobody is deprived in India because of its defense expenditure. It remains, @2.5% of its GDP, one of the lowest in the world.
We are going crazy! May God bring sanity in the minds of fellow Pakistanis who are so happy on these gadgets of mass destruction.
peace
R. khan y to cut our defence needs for education. so that the enemies, on 2 sides of our borders n the one sitting in middle east, may eat us easily? y not to cut the amount being looted out through corruption, y not to boost our economy by providing energy n infrastructure n arrange for all our needs, y not to explore our billions of dollars natural resources in Baluchistan. y dont we understand that cutting our defence spendings will make us an easy target for the 3 enemies, regards
@adam:
I really do not understand what you mean by your statement.
If you want it simple enough: Big toys belong to big boys. When the little ones get it they turn in to Pakistan or North Korea.
700 KM only? anyways something is better than nothing
Fire it straight into presidency and one into the prime minister house. for once use it for the good of this country.
None of these things are going to stop anyone from coming at Pakistan if they really want to. Your quickness to advertise is more like notifying them in advance of some of your strategic capabilities. That means it's not going to stop them from coming for you, they're just going to do it at a slightly different angle. You actually have to surpass the capabilities of a country to make a difference in deterrent measures. They'll always choose to come at you from your weakest point. You guys, in reality, only concentrate on offense. The holes in your defense make it all worthless. No matter how big the blast is, if you're caught up in it, you're just as dead and the collateral cost you can't afford is the bonus prize.
@Bruteforce, forget the credibility and wanted and unwanted state, come down to reality to leave a statement which is widely acceptable, take in nuclear terms, not hunamity here.,
expecting a grass eating competition in london olympics :D
I hate technology of this kind, but, since it is the survicial technology, appreciated. Human in the "new word" is conditional to capabilities and economics, pak should now concentrate into the other aspects of HRD index. good luck
@Zeeshan: soo much mindwork,, take some rest
@zamasoch: patriotism is a good thing.........
Hmm...Indian chopper comes to Pakistan. GPS data of Indian helipads and bases is copied by Pakistan and now we test a GPS guided cruise missile!! Interesting!!
@stevenson :you are right about south Asia, but the trickle down effect started by china who threatened us to join Pakistan during 1965 war.do we really have any choice...???
So how many more mssiles does Pakistan have to test before it can make a diesel engine and pay railway men their salaries ?
@let there be peace: Cause the manuals are in Chinese. Whenever the old translator leaves they test it to make sure the new translator has got it right,
Keep spending your precious money on these missiles and nukes, India is not going to attack. But after sometimes they'll be suitably increase the show in museum. You would't be able to use anyway and same is true for India, there are many powers who come in the way whenever India or Pakistan will try to go for nuclear attack. There will if it happens only a conventional war because everybody knows in the world of the comparative damage for both of the countries.
Moreover India's nukes are not Pakistan-centric, there are power(s) to worry but for Pakistan it is one and only India. Adding to that Missiles and nukes are quite good to be used as deterrence but not good enough when plagued with myriad of problems.
These missiles named after medieval rulers is bringing Paksitan back to medieval ages.
@point blank and other Indians
India is 4-5 larger than Pakistan. The size comparison would be smaller if you minus a quarter of your territory under Maoist.
You started the race because of "China" and "NATO"? Rest assured, China and NATO have no interest in fighting Indians. It's your own bravado desire to make yourself the master of South Asia that drove you to spend billions on the latest weapons while your people are languishing without food, water and basic necessities. Please don't lecture Pakistan about this because your own country is more than willing to eat grass to be the next "shooperpower". Pakistan followed suit because it has no desire to be weak in this region. Remember your two enemies: Chinese and Pakistan or should we say, the "red army Chinks" and the "terrorists who are out in destroying Bharat".
@charlatan,
I hope you are not an Indian because it sounded extremely hypocrite coming from a country that named its weapon as Agni.
The impressive stealth technology takes the 80% of the national budget. That's very impressive and soon to realize Z. A. Bhutto's dream of eating grass! Keep it up!
@R. Khan:Is it waste of money?.Then what education you are talking about, whose health has made you concerned ?
Pakistan's priorities are grossly misaligned. Were it Haiti or Kampuchea doing this, it could hardly be any more appalling.
@Agenda: Funny statement!!! One of India's "missiles" planted India's flag on the moon. That is supersonic and had a range of at least 384,403 Kms. Wake us up they you get close!!!
@stevenson: How did India start an "missile and nuclear" arms race in South Asia?!!! India does not need missiles or nuclear weapons to deal with any country in South Asia. They are meant for countries with similar capabilities like China and NATO. It is Pakistan who started their delusional "race" of catching up.
India's security needs are way bigger than Pakistan. India has a vast land and water area which needs to be patrolled and secured. India is 8 times the size of Pakistan. Even by the same per capita parity, it will be at least 8-10 times the defense capabilities of Pakistan. So, what is Pakistan "racing" for?!! I do not see any other South Asian country "racing" too!!!
@Khalid Ahmed: who told you? get ur facts right. i m living in the very zone.recently naga rebels had an open parade with their so called defence minister taking salutes and that too under the presence of media.
LOL...I can understand your feelings @ashok sai
Masha'Allah..
Whenever the country is in the dumps, or the Army finds itself in a deep hole, or the economy is going down the drain, the people in power feel the only way to make people happy is give them a 'feel-good' story.
Because the defence establishment knows that Pakistan is the only country in the world where the citizens feel jubilant to hear about their new missiles (the same way a Brazilian would feel about his team winning the Football World Cup).
Every now and then, ISPR gives out a news release...Ghauri or Ghazni or Timur or Nadir Shah or Genghiz or Khilji or Tughlak.....has been test fired....and all the public goes crazy and this gives them a great high. This strategy has worked every time !
Design stolen from American Tomahawks - you guys ever going to invent anything on your own? , Per Wikipedia "Babur is based on the BGM-109 Tomahawk cruise missile, after six Tomahawks crash-landed on Pakistani territory in 1998 during US airstrikes on targets in Afghanistan,"
Only stealth for Pakistani radar System:D
Why dont the army test it against the next drone which violate the pak territory. We can see the accuracy then.......
@Spaniard: I have painted the word stealth on my car and it is still visible. BTW, waiting for Babur-II (Humayun), Humayun-XII (Akbar), Akbar-MXV (Shahjehan)........ They could be so stealthy that even the fabricators and operators might not see them missiles.
Maintaning peace with lamas head u must gotta have these horses.
Now Pak can go to Quetta and capture the leader Mullah Omar of the Quetta shura without the other shura members knowing it. Stealth technology caught OBL first, Mullah omer second ??
@yasin: this stealth is on the basis of assumption that cruise missiles are still capable of inflicting damage. when it was first thought of, at that time only missiles above 300 mtrs could be tracked and shot down. but now India has capability to shoot down 10 mtr altitude missiles and babur got more altitude. moreover its subsonic. era of subsonic missiles are gone. believe it or not.
@faraz: If a majority of Indians who don't have access to a toilet are happy about Indian missiles, why shouldn't "grass eating" Pakistanis take pride in their weapons? Forgot that India started the missile and nuclear arms race in South Asia?
@dcomp: its not a north korean missile. its similar to tomahawk.
@ukmuslim: Dream on.....
Sorry to burst your bubble guys but A.Q.Khan did not run an International Black-market for free. These missiles are a product of that black-market. Pakistan set up a barter system with North Korea. Nukes in exchange of Missiles.
Talking about North Korea, it too have nukes and even longer range missiles, but it is still considered one of the most failed states in the World and has a highly reputed neighbour, who can win only praises. I wonder why other 2 Countries are similar?
Alhumdulilah
@ashok sai
WHAT? are you calling TTP terrorists? They are your ( India's) strategic assets. They have been trained with your taxes. Come on....
@Tauseef: I agree with your comments. What you have commented has been fully explained in a recent book "Playing with fire:Pakistan at war with itself" written by Pamela Constable. A must read book for Pakistanis.
hmm-- are the Haqqanis now going to fire these missiles into Afghanistan?
Please correct the photo caption: Replace.. "The indigenous developed missile has a range of 700 kilometers and also missile also has stealth capabilities" with... "The indigenous developed missile has a range of 700 kilometers and this missile also has stealth capabilities"
@let there be peace: By the way since you do not know, this is a terrain hugging cruise missile and not ballistic, so china korea or for that matter india has not tested this kind. India has one which technology is borrowed from Russia and is the so called brahmos, but it is not terrain hugging and is visible in radar as it gains altitude. So, my apologies Pakistan could not oblige you to make you happy. Sorry.
Pakistan-the most developed country in the world must be proud of this :P
Well done Pak
by merely renaming and repainting north korean missiles won't make it a indigenous one....if every low flying object can be considered as a stealth technology then my birds have better stealth technology....anyways good luck
love pak for acquiring stealth technology
@antanu g
Both ULFA and Naga have given up violence and come to the table for peace talks. What about TTP?
Wow! My stomach is full now!
Dushman ki har ik bat ko ulta smjhoo. Wo din ko kahay din, tu tum rat samjho.
Translates something like:
Disbelieve whatever your enemy says. If he calls the day as "day"; then consider day as night.
Indians are probably not our enemies but we ourselves have turned into our biggest enemies by denying ground realities and trying to refute all sensibilities.
@Khurram: we r waiting dude
awesome
@ashok sai: What abour hundreds of thousands of Rebels? Can you scare them with your missiles (which fail mostly)
The military should strive to make inter-continental ballastic missile to reach US to do hard bargaining for aid and placing of their strategic assets in Afghanistan. Pakistan is going the Soviet Union way.
I am scared now, please someone hide me.
There is no point in just developing these missiles and keeping them on shelves...they should use it on someone !
congratulations to pak army,pak govt and all fellow pakistanis.only few countries in the world have stealth technology and now pakistan has also joined the group.this is really a admirable achievement of pak army that will certainly enhance our defence capabilities.
ALLAH-O-AKBAR...... what a great feeling :)
This is called political crisis or management crisis.
Allah Hu Akbar. What a glorious success. Thank You China.
@Agenda: also include economy and education
Long Live Pakistan. Pak-Armed Forces Zindabaad.
@ashok sai: did maoist, ULFA and NAGA ARMY ran awy when india test fired trishul?
Good job, Pakistan should spread this word indigenous in other products
kudos to pk. its subsonic missile which fly low but unfortunately for pk, in the past two decades the countermeasure of cruise missiles are deployed by India. so limited use only. these stealth tech is only its low flying capability as told by nescom and ispr on previous occasions.
Long live Pakistan. Pak Army Zindabad.
Long live Pakistan amen
Defense spending and debt servicing consume more than 60% of the national budget each year. Who wants or even cares about "health", "education"....etc?
not sure about TTP... but certainly drones will not attck
Why does Pakistan re-tests missiles? They have been already tested in China and North Korea.
now install this mode of distruction on indian border and press button
this is good bcs what is hapen in the word. An american are give treat to them
Publish a new home made report showing that Pakistan is better off when compared to every country in the world. If you need some help then please contact the local history text book writers in Pakistan and they will be certainly very willing to help, as they are champions in distorting history and facts....., thanks to Gen. Zia-Hul-Haq.
US should know it now,and Indians already know it.
@ashok sai
Probably they should not escape but you Indian would definitely escape
What a waste of precious money which can be used to educate the youth & improve our health services!
Hope scientists could increase the range, as India is big enough to cover.
@Spaniard: That's probably why they used it. It sounds pretty. But since when has anyone needed to get passed their own radars inside their own borders where all your enemies are or will be stationed since you can't keep them out?
Grass eating Pakistanis are proud of this
We will never let India go ahead of us in the missile and nuclear technology ...
Hearing this news TTP terrorists feared and ran out of Pakistan to save their lives.
I like the word Stealth Technology...Now Pakistan got this technology...Impressive...
