Police add sexual harassment to the FIR against the MLO

A medical report has said that Jinnah hospital’s trainee nurse was raped, said medico-legal officer (MLO) Dr Fehmida Mubin.

The 22-year-old third-year student was treated for head injuries a day ago after she was discovered bleeding, face down on the ground in a housing complex for doctors at the hospital. It appeared that she had either jumped or fallen from the first floor flat of MLO Dr Abdul Jabbar Memon. Dr Memon jumped from the first floor and fractured his leg. He was treated for his injuries as well.

Sindh Health Department’s chemical examination laboratory confirmed the rape after inspecting the samples collected from the victim. Chemical examiner Dr Fazal Ilahi Memon has signed the report (6713/14).

After the MLO’s report was prepared, the police added the relevant charges to the FIR against Dr Abdul Jabbar Memon but did not present him in court on Thursday. The case’s investigation officer requested an extension in his full-body remand till July 28 but the request was turned down by the court as Memon was not present. The officer explained that Memon had been directed by his doctor to refrain from walking. The court expressed its disapproval.

Saddar SI Rao Mubashir, deputy public prosecutor Babar Sohail and judicial magistrate south Abdul Qadir appeared before the court and said that an attempted-murder case has already been filed against Dr Memon but rape charges (Section 376) have also been added.

According to Dr Fehmida’s medical report, the nurse had six injuries and she was sexually abused. The reports were also presented in court.

The court allowed the IO to present Memon immediately, otherwise the remand would not be extended. But the officer failed to present him until the end of the day.

Jinnah hospital’s security officer Muhammad Akram Janjua had filed the case at Saddar police station. He said that on July 13, a second-year trainee nurse had jumped out of the window of Room 96 of the doctors’ mess at the hospital to save her life and suffered severe injuries.

It has been over 48 hours, but the nurse has yet to gain consciousness and hence her statement has not been recorded. A DNA test will also be conducted to find out if the nurse was gang-raped but the final report can only be complete after she records her statement.

The neurosurgeon, who operated on her, Professor Sattar Hashim, and other doctors on his team are trying to save her life. According to Dr Hashim, there is still some swelling on the nurse’s brain and her treatment became complicated due to blood clotting. She is being treated in the intensive care unit where she is constantly being monitored, he added.

On Thursday, Sindh Health Minister Dr Sagheer Ahmed, Secretary Health Syed Hashim Raza Zaidi, head of the department’s inquiry committee, Captain Abdul Majid, and police surgeon Dr Hamid Padhia visited the hospital.

According to an inquiry committee, the accused doctor’s statement has been recorded. He denied any involvement in the incident and blamed the nurse of conspiring against him. The committee will submit its report on Friday.

The victim’s sister told the media that her sister had complained to the administration that Memon used to bother her during work but no one took any action.

Nurses continue to protest at JPMC

The nurses, paramedical staff and students at Jinnah hospital continued their protest for the third day on Thursday. They completely boycotted the wards. The call for the strike was made by the Pakistan Nursing Federation and Provincial Nurses Association.

Patients had to face problems as the staff stayed clear of the Out-Patients Department as well. Nursing officials, Jehanzeb Khan and Sehar Naz, accused the hospital administration of shifting the accused to a private hospital even though he was not as severely injured as the victim, who is currently under treatment at JPMC.

They said that their protest will continue until the MLO is barred from practice and other doctors, who are living illegally in the doctors’ colony, are removed.

Where are the human rights and women rights activists and NGOs? Are they sleeping ?? on lashing of a woman by the Taliban they launches protest demonstrations around the country but rape of a woman seems less important and little crime to them than lashing a woman.

Where is the law against harassment of women in the working places? Where is Asma Jehangir’s HRCP? Where is Tahira Abdullah, whome I respect more than the human rights activists,? Where is rthe Aurat Foundation?

Can any one tells me that the Publicity hungry Sahrmila Farooqui protecting the pertpetrators of the crime or the victim??

Of course all of them would have been on the streets in every city of the country if this crime would have been committed by any militant or member of a religious group or army personnel.

The silence of these people is a clear manefestation that they are more interested in getting appreciation from the Western countries than protecting women against violence.Recommend

Sultan.. do u believe that action will b taken against the accused. Look at the audacity of the accused doctor.. he is saying that the nurse is conspiring against him. The poor girl is in coma since July 13.. is this not evidence enough that the MLO is lying.. I m really surprised by the silence of these NGOs! n why no govt. official has visited the girl as yet. Just saw Dr. Seemi’s interview regarding this issue.. she herself claimed that the MLO is a very powerful man n he had also misbehaved earlier with the girl, on whose complaint he was suspended. But still he was living in Doctor’s colony..strange.. very strange!Recommend

I’m really ashamed how such kind of heinous crime has committed on a hapless nurse. No doubt about the reputation of this doctor but with sorry to victim and victim’s family could anybody explain to me how she has been to doctors mess whether somebody has abducted her or she has been their willingly. Although I’m sorry but let me explain to the family of poor victim that nothing will happen to dr jabbar memon. Suppose if same act has been done by an ordinary person our so called police officials drag him to court forcibly, then why not this doctor. Oh I’m sorry where’re our NGOs like war, aurat, HRCP and especially sharmila farooqui who wants to leave among television screen round the clock. If once these culprit doctors were awarded an exemplary punishment according to the rules of law, I assure you that such kind of events will never happen again. How many women are now Senators, MPA, MNA and public representatives never seen before then how much voices you’ve heard for and behind this innocent victim. At this moment I’m really very sad but would be grateful to our justice system led by Honourable Justice Iftekhar choudhry, if I heard a good tiding that those culprits have got exemplary punishment for their nonsense act.
Generally speaking, to curb the curse of sexual abuse all pillars of the state and our so called civilised society must act collectively to root out this menace at all levels. Women-friendly legislations and establishment of women crisis cells are good steps but the real issue is implementation. Recommend

If the said doctor would have been warned against previous coplaints of nurse, then this incident would have never happened. But we as a nation alway wait for something to happen whether it is law or terrorism or human rights etc.

I know you are surprised that why this evil is admitted to the hospital. After ruining her life, he tried to escape. He jumped down from the balcony of the building, where he committed that sin. He fractured his hip bone in process and he’s already undergone for two surgeries in Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH). JPMC nurses angrily … See Morequestioned the basis on which Dr Memon was shifted to the Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH), but authorities couldn’t answer clearly. Latest news is that he’s remanded and Sindh government and Pakistan’s Senate Committee on Health have taken action and things will be much clearer after victim’s statement.Recommend

I wouls like to reply to Husna Khalid about what was she doing there? You urself are a female and you have given such a foolish statement. God forbid if anything such like this incident happens with you or ur family member. Will you reply the same way…
She did’nt go by herself there and but was taken there by some means. Will you go to someone you don’t like or love???
If she submitted herself to that Dr than what was the logic of raping her??? If he was getting everything easily than why rape???Recommend
